桂花樓 Gui Hua Lou, an award-winning fine-dining Chinese restaurant, offers authentic Huaiyang, Cantonese, Shanghainese and Sichuanese cuisines, right inside Shangri-La Pudong.
Chef Sam Gao
Chef Gao Xiao Sheng, also known as Chef Sam, has nearly 30 years of Huaiyangnese culinary experience. The 50-year-old chef is fond of blending culinary influences with his own recipes and takes great pleasure in creating dishes with the new ingredients he discovers on a regular basis. His expertise lies in Huaiyangnese and Cantonese style cuisines. Gui Hua Lou’s dishes embody Chef Gao’s culinary philosophy of blending Huaiyang and Sichuan cooking styles.
The Food
I will not go into individual courses, as I wasn’t that impressed by their quality. Nothing stood out.

The famous restaurants in all Shangri-La are Shang Palace, many of which got Michelin stars. Gui Hua Lou, while competent, was not worthy of the Michelin nod. We can get better Shanghainese food, say, at Spring in Shanghai and at a lower price. But the service and the setting were perfect for business lunches.
