I love Korean BBQ – it was something that even influenced the Japanese. This is the second time I went to a specialty pork Korean BBQ place and ordered beef.
Established in South Korea in April 2007, Seorae Galmaegi started as the leading brand in Seoul for pork skirt meat Galmaegisal. Since then, they have opened over 250 stores around the world, including Singapore. They recently just opened in Shanghai Raffles City Changning, and it was a really popular lunchtime place for its reasonable priced lunch sets.
A fully-grown pig or cow produces very little of skirt meat Galmaegi. It is so rare, it was once said to be reserved only for Korean royalty of the past, this exclusive sirloin-extension — forming only 250 grams between the ribs and belly of a full-grown pig — is now a must-have on every local Korean buff’s platter.
Bibimbap is served as a bowl of warm white rice topped with namul (vegetables), kimchi (pickled cabbage) and gochujang, soy sauce, or doenjang. The term “bibim” means mixing rice, while the “bap” noun refers to rice. Dolsot-bibimbap (돌솥비빔밥) is bibimbap served in a hot stone pot, and this version is well-known for the way the bowl makes a layer of crispy, crackling rice on the bottom of the bibimbap. The set came with a seaweed soup, a small portion of bulgogi and small plate of kimchi.
Set lunches did not come with banchan (side dishes/appetisers), a highlight of any Korean meals. The banchan can be refilled, and you can make this the main meal in most cases.
The banchan was accompaniment for the Korean BBQ Premium Meat Platter that included a cut of everything on offer.
The restaurant preserves the original taste of Korean BBQ with the use of charcoal but there’s an original innovation of grilled cheese on the side, and corn with eggs. You can dip the meat into the molten cheese like a fondue. Cute but no thanks.
The meats were grilled by a waiter so you do not need to worry about them. But due to the crazy number of people for lunch, they could not do a proper job for all the meat. So if you want a proper experience, I suggest to go during dinner, where the crowd was much smaller.
