The last time I was at Lawry’s was almost four years ago. We thought we would come again soon, but it turned out to be 4 years later and delivered to our house.
Lawry’s the Prime Rib
The place is steeped with traditional – once you placed order, warm bread is served wrapped in a thick napkin. You start dinner with the traditional spinning bowl salad of ice berg lettuce, cherry tomatoes (one each per person), croutons and house thousand island and optional cheese in this part of the world. The salad comes with every order of main course. And at this point, your cold starter is served – in our case, it is almost always a family tradition to order fresh shucked oysters.
Prime rib entrée
While they offer many other options, the main attraction is their prime ribs. Every standing rib roast at Lawry’s The Prime Rib is USDA prime quality, aged for at least 21 days and slowly roasted for natural tenderness. The prime rib entrée comes with a side of forest mushroom soup, mashed potatoes whipped with milk and butter until smooth and creamy, Yorkshire pudding baked in small skillets until puffy and golden brown and their housemade whipped cream horseradish. All you need to worry about is how much steak can you eat – the Singapore cut is unique, which is two thin slices of prime ribs. But I usually go for the Lawry’s Cut (featured in the photo) medium rare, which is 285g of meat. And then you have the American size – “Diamond Jim Brady” Cut – when you dine in Lawry’s in the US, this is the regular cut.
We also ordered a special set dinner that came with sides and a dessert – their luscious chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream and lots of sinful condiments. And if you are celebrating your birthday, the waitresses will bring a small slice of cake and sing their bluesy rendition of happy birthday “~~~and many more~~~~~”. You will hear that multiple time during dinner because one, having a prime rib is also a happy occasion, and two, Lawry’s isn’t cheap.
Delivery
Fast forward to 2020, we cannot go dine in restaurants, we are stuck at home for over 50 days already, and Princess needs her steak fix.

The order came on time – we asked for a 12-12.30pm timeslot, the delivery appeared on the dot at 12pm. We ordered a starter – oysters are not on the delivery menu for fear of contamination, so we settled for their traditional crab cakes. Came a bit cold and soft, need to perk it up in the oven before serving.

The entree came with their horseradish cream, Yorkshire pudding, mashed potato and forest mushroom soup. The salad is conspicuously missing. So are the dinner rolls. You need to heat them up, all came quite cold. But hey, it’s delivery, they have to prepare it ahead of time don’t they and I am 40 min away from their restaurant? Not complaining, just setting expectation when you order.

OK, what about the prime ribs? We ordered the English cut – three thin slices of beef – which we regretted when we opened up the box. All steaks should not be precut to lock in the juices. The beef came swimming in their own jus, a sorry sight. We tried to salvage the lunch, by replacing everything to restaurant standard. Recommend that you get proper steak knifes if you don’t have them.
And for dessert we have to make do with our own arrangement of Chateraise strawberry shortcake, which I dabao when I was doing my grocery run.
Overall, it was a good experience, the delivery was punctual and the guy was cheerful despite the pressure to get everything to everyone on time, just like the service you would get from their restaurant. Missed the spinning bowl salad though, they should warn you that it is not part of delivery.
Just waiting for dine in to resume, this time it would not be another 4 years before I go there again.
