The best long hauls are almost always Asian airlines, and I got a chance to try the EVA Airline’s Taipei to San Francisco flight.
Royal Laurel Dining – Dinner Service
The Royal Laurel Dining service is the special EVA Business Class dinner service for long hauls.
Prelude – Roasted Duck and Crostini

Roasted Duck with Apricot, Crostini with Cherry Tomato and Mozzarella Cheese
Two tiny bites as an amuse bouche, the smoked duck was quite yucky. The crostini was not too bad.
Hors D’oeuvre – Seared Scallop and Proscuitto

Seared Scallop, Proscuitto with Cantaloupe and Honeydew
I like the way the Taiwanese used American English to distinguish between the green melon (honeydew) and rock melon (cantaloupe) – made them sound delicious. The scallop was not seared. In fact, it wasn’t even fresh.
Main Course – Grilled USDA Prime Beef Tournedos

Grilled USDA Prime Beef Tournedos with Crystal Pink Salt or Cabernet Sauce, Mixed Vegetables, Potato Pancake
USDA prime beef is produced from young, well-fed beef cattle with abundant marbling. Tournedos are small round pieces of beef cut from the end portion of beef tenderloin, often cooked with bacon or lard. So you might think that this would be a good steak. However, beef steak in the air was always horrible because not was precooked and reheated. This was the same. Fortunately the accompaniments made up for the poor quality of the beef.
Sweets – Fruits, Sea Salt Caramel Cake

Breakfast – Taiwanese Porridge

Really enjoyed these hot porridge up the air, with the scallion omelette, assorted vegetables and pork floss, and a cube of preserved tofu.

And then rounded off with assorted Taiwanese fruits.
Other Meals

This is a shorter haul Business Class meal featuring more exotic South East Asian dishes, like the curry chicken, green beans with turmeric rice.
And on the way out of Taipei, you can get sesame chicken with rice vermicelli and the special hefewiezen brewed specially by EVA.
