When one cannot travel to Japan, where can one go to get proper Japanese food? The quality in Singapore varies, with the best commanding prices that are 2~3x more than Japan. But at Sen, the CP value is quite high.

Overlooking the picturesque bay front of Marina Bay Sands, Sen of Japan is a modern Japanese restaurant and bar serving traditional Japanese cuisine with a contemporary touch. No, they did not pay me to write this review. But the service I got was good and the food was value for money, especially if you have the AMEX platinum dining benefits. Don’t say I bojio.

The lunch sets at Sen are pretty good value for money, depending the main course you have picked. Like the Yuzu Kosho Black Cod Set ゆずみそ銀鱈セット was only $37 and came with a small Japanese salad, 5 pieces of tempura, rice, tsukemono, miso soup and dessert with a sizeable piece of baked black cod marinated in yuzu kosho (grapefruit and perilla) and sautéed mushrooms. And the A4 Wagyu Steak Set A4 和牛焼肉セット came with a grilled Japanese A4 wagyu beef, sautéed mushrooms and Onsen egg over rice with the same side dishes.

Hon Maguro Nigiri Set. 本まぐろにぎりセット came with Chef’s selection of three different cuts of bluefin tuna nigiri (6 pieces) – akami, chutoro & otoro. This lunch option also came with the rest of the washoku (except the rice).

22 pieces of Chef’s selection of assorted premium sashimi. (Clockwise)

Everything was really fresh, and the cuts of tuna were exceptional. It was also noteworthy that the wasabi used was the freshly grated variety and not the premixed ones.
The place was packed for lunch, especially with the conference going on. But the turnover of the tables was really quick and swift, as everyone was just effective and wanted to get on with business. So don’t expect the same service level on the weekends. Can get a bit chaotic at the top of the lunch hour, so not a place to entertain customers, only for a quick lunch and be on your way in MBS.
