East Treasure 東寶 @ Woodlands (2023)

Have been coming here since they opened in Woods Square, and it is our family go-to place when we eat out these days.

Nice decor

Cantonese restaurant East Treasure 東寶 opened in 2021, and since then business has been quite slow because of Covid. But even with the reopening, it was not as popular as Crystal Jade across the road at Causeway Point even though it was quite delicious.

Dry ageing ducks

I am not sure how the dry ageing has helped with the flavours of texture of the duck. But I know that it is normal for Cantonese roast masters to air dry their fowls before roasting to give it ample time for the marinade to permeate the poultry, as well as giving the skin a crispier texture after roasting by eliminating all excess moisture.

Carved at the table side

The result was a really beautifully roasted Peking duck. When it was served, we can see the crispiness from the glisten on the duck.

The duck was then carved on the table side and then wrapped individually in the traditional flour skin with julienned cucumber, pickled carrot and leek with the sweet and savoury roast duck sauce.

The first slices – eat with sugar

These days, they would serve the back pieces separately as a teaser, to be eaten with sugar.

All wrapped up for you

I simply enjoyed that we did not have to dirty our hands to wrap the Peking duck ourselves.

Chopped up as a second course

The remaining duck was chopped up and served as a second course. As these ducks were not the same ones used in Beijing or China, there was still some meat left on the thighs and drumsticks.

Deboned and stir-fried with E-Fu noodles for third course

The breast meat was taken out and chopped up to be stir-fried as an add-on third course with e-fu noodles, which was Princess favourite.

We usually ordered the crocodile soup, but decided to try their pig stomach soup instead. Not as peppery as we hoped it would be, and they was only quite little amount of pig stomach.

They have a live seafood tank, and the grouper was still swimming in the tank before it ended up here. As fresh as you can get, the Cantonese-style steaming technique was sufficient to make this a good eat.

The first time I had this dish was at KLIA airport at their Chinese restaurant next to the McD. It was usually the last stop before I return home on those turnaround trips to KL. I quite enjoyed dit then and was very happy to see it in this menu.

Afterthoughts 

The food was solid Cantonese food, with familiar flavours that would have only be from Malaysian Chinese cooks. The place was bright and airy, and even without the restriction to dining, 5 of us were seated around a 10-seater. The place remained rather empty even though the service was solid and the food has remained good after 3 years. Hope they stick around.
