Stookey’s Club Moderne @ San Francisco

Sons and Daughters do not have a bar, so you cannot go for a pre-dinner drink. Fortunately Stookey’s is just down the road (and up the hill).

Stookey’s Club Moderne, located between Nob Hill and Union Square, is a lounge evoking the style of post-prohibition San Francisco (1930-1940) opened in January 2015, by a dynamic trio of owners – husband and wife Tim Stookey and Leslie Cole Stookey and Leslie’s cousin Aaron Cole. It looks like it just came out of The Rocketeer set with its Art Deco style.

Streamline Moderne is an international style of Art Deco architecture and design that emerged in the 1930s. Inspired by aerodynamic design, it emphasised curving forms, long horizontal lines, and sometimes nautical or aviation elements. Just think of

The 1930s high modernist decor in tasteful chrome, neon, and pastels, bow-tied waiters and gorgeous glassware bring its guests back in time and into the mood of Dashiell Hammett’s San Francisco. The only thing out of sync are the guests themselves, all dressed in the fashion of a wrong era.

Cocktails, which went out of favour to wines and beers, saw a revival in recent times. San Francisco was a leader in the invention of cocktails due in great part to its being a port city with imported wines and liquors and medicinal bitters, a fertile land of yerba buena, aka mint and citrus, and a city founded by diverse adventure-seeking folks here to reinvent themselves and the world. It was the perfect place for such a revival.

Aviation (Ensslin, 1915)

Gin, Maraschino, Crème de Violette, Fresh Lemon

Aviation (R) and Virgin Mojito

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a drink developed past 1940, so I would recommend their Aviation. Evoking the spirit of the skies with its blue coloration, this cocktail was a favourite before prohibition and made famous at the Hotel Wallack, NYC.

The white-jacketed bartenders can shake up a variety of cocktails featuring spirits appropriate to the Deco time period, with a number of SF classics (pisco punch, Irish coffee, and the mai tai) and highballs too—all served in vintage glassware. Sometimes they do standup comedy and live bands too. Check out their website to see schedule.
