In the evening, Kakoiya specialises in 炉端料理 Robatayaki in private rooms. But during lunch, they offer affordable lunch sets for the busy white collars in the CBD of Tokyo.

ょうこそ我が家へ (Welcome to my home) – the kanban at the entrance proudly exclaims to everyone that comes to this very popular restaurant. Situated at the basement of a swanky office building in downtown Tokyo, one would not expect a labyrinth of private rooms different sizes that allow some privacy during lunchtime at such affordable prices.

豚の角煮御膳 Braised Pork Belly Set

This set lunch came with a generous portion of buta kakuni 豚の角煮 or braised pork belly. Came with a side of soup 味噌汁. steam rice and tororo yamaino とろろ 山芋 mashed mountain yam to cut the greasiness of the pork belly. The sticky braise sauce looked delicious, so was the braised radish.

平日限定ランチプラン『刺身天ぷら御膳』Tempura and Sashimi

This daily limited set came with tempura 天ぷら and sashimi 刺身, with the standard bowl of steamed rice, soup 味噌汁 and chawanmushi. This was the most I have seen in term of assortment of sashimi for a lunch set – five different types of fish.

銀だらの味噌焼き御膳 Grilled Silver Cord with Miso Glaze Set

This is another special fish of the day, but what was attractive was all the side dishes that came with it. The soup was shijimi no misoshiru しじみの味噌汁 clams miso soup, the side was tonkatsu とんかつ pork cutlet. Of course the main course of gindara no miso-yaki 銀だらの味噌焼き or grilled silver cod with miso glaze was good too.

焼き魚とあら汁御膳 Grill Fish and Soup Set

The specialty of this set was the arajiru あら汁 or special fish soup. The soup used whatever fish the kitchen can get its hand on from the leftover parts from preparing the sashimi, and was absolutely delicious from the delicate umami and sweetness from the fish. Again the main course was looked over, but the tara no misozuke yaki 鱈の味噌漬け焼き or grilled cod marinated with miso was also quite good.

The lunch menu changes frequently, so it is an excellent choice for lunch. Reservations are an absolute must if you do not want to wait in line and share a table with others.
