I have not been to T1 in a while as my favourite airlines do not take off from this terminal in Changi Airport. And if I do, it also means that I need to grab a bite as I do not have lounge access.

Established in Japan in 1966, Saboten has flourished into one of the largest Tonkatsu chains with over 500 shops in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong and Canada.

The speciality here is tonkatsu and prices are reasonable but not very cheap. However the portions are decent and the tonkatsu served is nicely done, juicy and delicious. I ordered the Saboten Special Set, which came with these:
- Fried Shrimp
- Mini Pork Tenderloin
- Half Loin
- Crab Cream Croquette

The entire meal will come with free flow of Japanese rice, shredded cabbage and miso soup, a small side (usually a small portion of egg omelette) and finish with a scope of matcha (green tea) ice cream.

I used to be able to take full advantage of the unlimited servings of rice and salad, but these days I just keep to the initial serving.

The highlight is the tonkatsu and you get the best of both worlds – the leaner loin meat that taste like the usual pork chop, and the juicier and tenderer tenderloin. All the meat coated with crisp golden bread crumbs was tender, soft, fresh, and juicy. There’s an upgraded version of the set using Kurobuta pork, but I seriously do not taste any difference.

The Japanese style croquette tastes like mashed potatoes that have been battered and deep fried. If you like Japanese mashed potatoes, you will like the croquettes too.

And to finish the meal on a sweet note, a scope of not so sweet matcha ice cream. It was frozen stiff and I was rushing to catch a plane, so I just left it alone.
Nice meal, quick turnaround, no fuss – that’s what I like about Saboten.
