Le Mansion 樂满軒 @ SRC (2024)

The ill-fated Chinese restaurants in SRC have changed over the years. First it was Swatow that took over in 2020 and served decent Teochew cuisine. And the Fu Lin Men in 2021 (I liked this one) which was mainly Cantonese. Now Le Mansion (2023) took over and served a mix of Cantonese and Teochew.

Le Mansion 樂满軒 is located on the second floor of Singapore Recreation Club at the Padang. The club is a member-only social club that has a long history. The restaurant has a wonderful view of the Padang, which unfortunately would be blocked when NDP season starts. Otherwise it is one of the best view in Singapore for dinner.

脆皮炸大肠 Deep-fried Pork Intestine

脆皮炸大肠 Deep-fried pork intestine served with sweet & sour sauce is a dish I used to order this when I was working in Hong Kong from the cha chaan teng near my apartment. This dish brought back all the memories; even the sauce was how I remembered it. Crispy on the outside, the deep fried pork intestine had been cleansed properly leaving no smell. But the canned pineapple slices did not do any good.

花雕醉鸡卷 Drunken Chicken Roll with Huadiao

Alright but not as good as the previous operator, the drunken chicken was dried out on the inside and the wine marinade tasted a bit bitter. Why did I order this again? Oh, because I really like this dish, just not the way they have done it.

石锅浓汤鸡鲍翅 Stone Pot Double-boiled Superior Shark’s Fin in Chicken Broth

Princess wanted some shark’s fin soup, and they have a version that is served in a Korean style stone pot that would keep the temperature of the soup for some time. I have been consciously trying to avoid this particular choice of ingredient until there was an article about the shark’s used these days are fins from non-endangered shark species like spiny dogfish and smooth dogfish.

Still you can replace the fins with other cartilage and it would taste the same. The fins themselves have no taste. The broth that is boiled from chicken bones, smoked Chinese bacon, dried scallops, and other delicacies gives the soup the taste.

酥炸鹌鹑 Deep-fried Quail

This is the closest to pigeon you can get in Singapore. Deep-fried quail tasted like the pigeon version except it is a much smaller bird. Like what they say in Hokkien, “No fish prawn also good.”

顺德煎莲藕饼 Pan-fried Pork Pattie with Lotus Root, Shunde Style

Shunde classic of sliced lotus root capped with minced pork and shrimp, and then pan fried. Simple and delicious. However they did not press the meat patties down hard onto the sliced lotus roots. They separated when you picked them up with the chopsticks.

蚝油芥蘭炒牛肉 Sautéed Sliced Beef & Kailan with Oyster Sauce

I asked for beef kailan, they said they don’t have the dish and can only do beef choysum. Then the kitchen said they ran out of choysum and made beef kailan instead. #facepalm

姜葱澳洲龙虾伊麵底 Ginger & Spring Onion Australian Lobster with E-fu Noodles

And for our final dish, the main course of 姜葱澳洲龙虾伊麵底 ginger & spring onion Australian lobster with e-fu noodles. I wished there were more sauce and more noodles because the ginger and scallion lobster was delicious.

This is the third Chinese restaurant to operate at this location in Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) since 2020. While it may not be the best by far (Fu Lin Men was nicer), it has the service team at the front of the house used to be from Fu Lin Men, so the service was still impeccable. With a new menu from the Master Chefs formerly of Hua Ting, it showed lots of potential.
