Whenever I get a weekend in San Francisco, I would see if I can squeeze a trip to Sausalito for a nice relaxing day.

Offering views of the mighty Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Recreation Area offers respite to all those seeking refuge from urban life. Pass amongst centuries-old trees, find peace in the blue waters of the Pacific, spy on whales from Muir Beach Overlook, explore all the Bay Area has to offer.

There are many ways to get to Sausalito, the most convenient way is to take the Golden Gate ferry from Pier 41 which gives you incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, and the San Francisco skyline. The second best way is to drive across the Golden Gate bridge to Sausalito.

What is Sausalito known for? Sausalito is known for its charming waterfront promenade, an old community of wooden houseboats, and the San Francisco Bay Model, a scale hydraulic model of the bay and local river deltas.

Darling wants (surprise, surprise) roasted prime ribs, and I want seafood; so we settled for a nice little restaurant that has both in Sausalito called Salito’s.

Salito’s has been a long standing part of the Sausalito landscape–Zack’s in the eighties, then Margaritaville and most recently Paradise Bay. The new look is fresh, bright and full of casual ambience.

Enjoy one of several refreshing Nick & Nora Cocktail Specials available from the full bar or just have a Cafe du Monde chicory coffee with freshly-made beignets.

The décor features the ceiling which has hanging whimsical model boats, taxidermy swordfish and basses which puts a smile on your face immediately.

And on one side of the wall are canned seafood like sardines and anchovies, etc. a reminder that this is a seafood restaurant.

Sitting on beautiful Richardson Bay in Sausalito, the blue sky and sparkling water are the perfect setting for an afternoon or evening of dining al fresco at Salito’s. Large decks overlook the water and the beauty of the area is absolutely breathtaking.

There’s a set menu with crab and prime ribs, with bread, salad, dessert all thrown. And that’s what we got.
House-made kettle bread served with Straus butter

Served with Straus butter which is local creamery making European style butter. European butter standards require a higher butterfat content. The churning process is slightly different than here in the US, resulting in a creamier consistency.
Blue Cheese Wedge Salad
pt. reyes blue cheese, bacon bits, tomato

This classic wedge salad recipe features iceberg lettuce, tomato, crumbled bacon, chives, and a creamy blue cheese dressing. The origins of iceberg lettuce and wedge salad history go back to ancient times. Food historians believe Egyptians were the first to cultivate lettuce. They developed the plant, grown for its oil-producing seeds, into a table food highly valued for its succulent leaves.
Caesar Salad
romaine lettuce, garlic croutons, shaved reggiano

Caesar salad was invented in the early 1920s by Caesar Cardini, an Italian chef who owned a restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico. He moved to Tijuana from California to avoid Prohibition, and it was here, on July 4th, 1924, where Caesar is believed to have invented the Caesar salad. It has nothing to do with Romaine lettuce or the Italian ingredients used.
USDA Prime Beef Prime Rib With Potatolitos

We had many meals of roast prime rib in the US, some of our favourites were House of Prime Rib and Tam O’Shanter. This one cannot compare with those. It was served quite cold, and it didn’t help it was a cold day. Served with potatolitos which are very time consuming to make but very crispy on the outside but soft and creamy on the inside.
Whole roasted Dungeness crab

Dungeness crab is a popular seafood delicacy prized for its sweet and tender meat. It has a unique and distinct flavour, a cross between swimmer crab and mud crab, that sets it apart from other types of crab. For me, I prefer my Sri Lankan crab any day.
Chocolate Twosome
a delicious genoise covered with a dark chocolate mousse and a milk chocolate mousse

You know I am not impressed with the food served when I start writing about the history of the food. But the final dessert hit the spot for me.

Airy venue serves up hefty portions of surf ’n’ turf in a festive setting with expansive bay views. While the food was not tip-top, service and the view made up for it.
