Just sent our helper back for her sabbatical, and it was still early in the morning (6am), so we drove down ECP to have our prawn mee fixed.

Beach Road Prawn Mee Eating House is a famous prawn mee (noodle) stall in East Coast, founded in the 1920s. It occupies 2 shophouses along East Coast Road near the East Coast-Telok Kurau Junction.

This prawn mee store starts at 7 am and we were the first one there. The last time we went, the soup was really watered down. Hopefully as the first customer, we will get the real deal.

We got the first bowls out of the kitchen as we were the first group of customers that morning. The soup looked right, and hopefully it would taste right.

The standard version comes only with prawns halved in the middle with 4 pieces of ribs for S$9.50. This time the soup was very robust and delicious. So it was not the bean sprouts that watered down the soup, it was the time of the day.

The soup that came with the dry version was the same, and you can ask for more soup if you need to. I ordered the version with sore ribs, and it still did not have sliced pork. And they still didn’t even bother to mix the sauce and noodles thoroughly anymore.

Every prawn noodle stall in Singapore worth their salt has specialty item, like jumbo prawns. They have the boiled pig tails and spare ribs, just like their cousins Jalan Besar Prawn Mee. The meat simply fell off the bones as you sucked through it.

This is my preferred choice of noodles, yellow noodles with that little bit of alkaline taste. The chilli paste was very traditional, not like those laden with belachan these days. Remember to ask for more chilli, as I did this time – it was delicious.

If you asked for bee hoon, do take note it was the laksa version and not the thin version. I think you have to be rather specific if you want the thin vermicelli.

Sharing the shop space with the prawn noodles is a small stall simply known as East Coast Ngoh Hiang. It belongs to the owner of the prawn noodles these days as most of their customers are patrons of the prawn noodles.

They mainly have some deep-fried items such as tofu, ngoh hiang and fishballs, which are refried prior to serving. The condiments (chilli sauce and the luminescence sweet sauce) are very old school. Do try them if you are having the prawn noodles.

Since they opened at 7am, the crowd had been streaming in despite the rainy Sunday morning.

By 7.40am, they have served over 20 tables of customers. The indoor seatings were already filled and the crowd was spilling to the side alleys despite the continuous rain that morning.

There are many prawn noodles stores around the island these days, so we are spoiled for choices. They are above average and it seems that their standard is quite good earlier in the morning. As they say, early bird catches the worm. They really need to keep the standard consistent throughout the day.
