Simple Fare

Chon Siam ชนสยาม @ Sydney

Located in the theatre district of Sydney, there are many quick and delicious eats. My usual favourite was closed, so I went the opposite side for my Thai noodles fix.

Chonsiam is open super late, heaving at midnight, friendly staff, reasonably priced boat noodles and kuay jub, open to the street, full of Thais, spicy as you likey, lingering pop power ballads, tiny chairs, real deal.

Boat Noodle Soup ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือ is thin rice noodles with pork or beef and Chinese kale in thick spicy broth. The soup was too sweet for my liking but the beef was blanched to the right doneness. And I loved their bouncy beef meatballs.

I was hoping for egg noodles, but it came with thick vermicelli 粗米粉. And if only it was available as a dry noodles, it would be perfect.

Guay Jupb ก้วยกิน is rice noodles with pork and blood jelly, boiled egg in five spice broth which we Teochews called Kuay Chap 粿汁, very similar in pronounciation.

I was so surprised that they have this in Sydney while we don’t in Singapore. Pig’s blood jelly can only be had if there are abattoirs that collect the pig’s blood fresh. These days, they are pasteurised and then processed. But still a health risk to eat blood tainted food.

The food is very exceptional, price is very reasonable for its location. I really really love their guay jupb, not so much of their boat noodles.
