Sinsa Kkotgedang 꽃게당 @ Seoul

Many recommend visiting Sinsa, a trendy district in Seoul, known for its vibrant food scene. There, you’ll discover various restaurants serving ganjang gejang, each with its own twist. Of course, we already flew all the way to Seoul – so I had to research and source for the best one.

Sinsa Kkotgedang at Apgujeong Rodeo is the branch of the popular and highly rated ganjang gegang restaurant. In the 90’s, this was the place where rich young people used to stride down the streets in luxury branded clothes and imported cars, imitating the life of Beverly Hills’ Redeo Drive and thus given the name and concept of Apgujeong Rodeo Street.

Sinsa Kkotgedang‘s simple yet delicious approach highlights the crab as the star ingredient, offering Korean cuisine boasting fresh seafood and rich traditional flavours. It has gained attention from both locals and visitors, with many Korean celebrities leaving their signatures on the walls.

I managed to score a reservation for 5.30pm and came here around 5pm; as there was no queue at all, I managed to get a table ahead of the reservation time and was served quite quickly after ordering.

The set typically includes marinated crab paired with various banchan (side dishes), enhancing the meal’s variety and richness. Common side dishes that accompany ganjang gejang include japchae (stir-fried noodles), beancurd skin, and potato salad, each adding its own unique texture and taste. Of course, everything is seasonal and varies depending on the chef’s mood.

Being Teochew, I grew up eating Teochew cold crabs and marinated crabs; the latter is similar to the Korean ganjang gejang, so this Korean marinate crab dish naturally becomes one of my favourite food that I will eat every time I am in town.

They use premium grade blue crabs that are caught fresh from the west sea of Korea and marinated them with their own special sauce made from fresh ingredients. It captures the unique and savoury taste that captivates your palate, harmoniously combining the artisan’s devotion and deep and rich soy sauce.

Ganjang gejang, or raw crab marinated in soy sauce, can be so addictive that it’s often affectionately called “rice thief,” the joke being that you keep eating more rice just so that you can have more gejang since it’s just that good.

In addition, their yangnyeom gejang 양념게장, or raw crab marinated in a sweet and spicy red chilli sauce, presented a refreshing and savoury charm that spread throughout your mouth as you chew, with the freshness of seafood and special seasoning harmonising.

Besides the crab, you also shouldn’t miss out on their other marinated seafood like this marinated abalone. The soy sauce abalone, a top-rated dish, is born from the meeting of live abalone from the clean waters of Jeju Island and high-quality soy sauce made with the long experience of artisans. The combination of abalone and soy sauce offers a soft and rich taste.

Finally, the crab hotpot stew, a very special dish we highly recommend! The crabs used in this stew are all top-quality selections, keeping their juices and flavours in the stew. The hotpot crab stew seems to contain the very freshness from the sea.

Hints of kimchi, notes of gochugang and doenjang combine to be the perfect stock to spoon over your rice. The flavour spikes the blue crab that is cooked to perfection. It’s dishes like this that make you truly appreciate Korean cuisine.

The hotpot also came with a pack of ramyeon. Once you’ve savoured every bit of the perfectly cooked crab, transform the broth into a delightful bowl of fresh crab noodles.

Finally, top it off with 식혜 shik-hye, a sweetened rice drink. It’s a refreshing and mildly sweet beverage with a pleasant, subtle malty aftertaste.

This is a great place to try this dish. Everything comes in a set so there’s no need to order them separately (saving the embarrassment of not speaking Korean). The service is good and efficient, but even when there’s very few tables occupied, they tend to rush you to finish the meal. There’s a lot of food, but you need to pay per head for the set, ie. you cannot order one set for two persons. Not sure if you can order for two and share among three though, my Korean wasn’t good enough to ask. Recommended.
