Ng Ah Sio Bah Kut Teh @ Rangoon Road

I blacklisted them the last time round, and it’s my own fault to come back here and be disappointed a second time.

Mr Ng Mui Song, father of Mr Ng Siak Hai (aka Ng Ah Sio), began serving aromatic Bak Kut Teh cooked in a distinct Teochew style in 1955 at the foot of Government Hill (皇家山脚, where present day Clarke Quay is) along River Valley. These early servings of the Bak Kut Teh was accompanied by Chinese fritters (You Tiao) and a strong brew of Chinese tea. They opened the current location in 1988.

My father was the first person to have brought me here for BKT since I was very small. I remembered his usual order – a bowl of premium ribs, a bowl of stale youtiao and a bowl of steamed white rice, and Teochew-style Kungfu tea. And if I was there, he would always add a bowl of pork kidneys, my favourite.

Mr Ng, an astute businessman, invested in Jumbo Seafood in its early days with the Ang family, but Ng Ah Sio BKT was “taken over” by Jumbo in 2010 and have since become part of the portfolio, and since the Group’s listing in 2015, they have been expanding to more branches and overseas. These days, everything is prepared in central kitchens to be distributed to all the locations. And back in 2018, I visited the place with my colleagues and I actually noted that I would not be back for a very long time.

Fast forward 2026 and I made the stupid mistake to go back to Ng Ah Sio with my HK friends because this place has gained popularity because of the HK Chief Minister incident. The standard of the food has not improved. With the renovation of the place, the ventilation became worse and so the dining experience deteriorated. The soup was still lukewarm and murky.

Hopefully I will not make the same mistake three times. Especially other chain stores like Founders and Song Fa have overtaken them in quality and locations. But current favourite is still Ya Hwa which has maintained standard and service.
