Dinner with Kumar

If you don’t know who is this APNN drag queen named Kumar, this stand-up comedy and dinner show is not for you. Get ready for a night of irrelevance and politically incorrect jokes.

In squeaky clean Singapore, Kumar is an institution. The stand-up comedian that created the Ra-Ra Show as well as the headline artist for the now defunct Boom Boom Room, he is known to make fun of everything, no hold bar. Cross-dressing, which started off as a gimmick, eventually became Kumar’s trademark. He became Singapore’s most well-known drag queen with his caustic wit and biting observations about life in Singapore, particularly about politics, race and sex.

The Kumar Show ran for an hour and a half at Blu Jaz club at the Central next to Clarke Quay. And then it reverted back to a DJ dance club for the later part (separate cover charge). And for the dinner show, you can order dinner and finger food from a menu that consisted of mainly Indian and Western choices.

I don’t understand guacamole, which basically is mashed avocado with bits of chopped tomatoes, coriander and onion, dressed with lime and serrano chili salsa. You scoop it with the tortilla chips provided. Not my favourite appetiser, but the youngsters in the family loved it.

Next, some tandoori chicken. Tandoori chick is a Punjabi specialty made from chicken marinated in yoghurt, ginger, garlic, red chilli with Indian spices and roasted in traditional clay oven called a tandoor. Serve with mint chutney & pickled onion.

Samosa Chaat is a popular Indian street food that layers crushed, crispy samosas with a spicy chickpea curry (chole), cooling yogurt, and sweet and tangy mint and tamarind chutneys. It is a mouthwatering, highly customisable dish known for its incredible mix of warm and cold temperatures and crunchy and creamy textures. Messy as a finger food, but it was one of the better eats for the evening.

The must-have finger food in Singapore, nobody says no to satay. Luscious skewers of chicken and lamb that had been marinated with a potpourri of spices and served with chopped onion, cucumber and a sweet and spicy peanut sauce, it would be perfect if they were charcoal-grilled.

Next, more messy stuff like bottles of whiskeys 🙂 It is a pub after all. Besides all that booze, there was some more butter chicken that was invented in London – succulent cubes of chicken tikka simmered in a rich creamy tomato gravy with house special spices, accompanied by some hot and crispy naan.

With all those naan, we need some more dips – mutton rogan josh – an Indian lamb curry with a heady combination of intense Kashmiri spices cooked over low flame in a creamy tomato curry sauce with a touch of fennel and yoghurt.

The sausage platter came with a generous serving of krakauer sausage, chorizo sausage, bratwurst sausage, spicy sausage & cheese sausage. served with homemade garden
pickles & honey mustard sauce with French baguette. The sausages were super-salty, so that you would drink a lot more.

The French fries is the same price as the truffle fries, which prompted us to just stick to the regular ones. The carbonara was made from cream sauce from a bottle. The Western selections were so far quite poor.

If you have been to an Indian wedding, this dessert is always served. Gulab Jamun is a classic South Indian dessert that is fried dough balls made from milk solids and semolina are soaked in a syrup flavoured with cardamom, rose water, saffron, and cloves. It wasn’t the crazy sweet that I was acquainted with, and the syrup had no rose water taste.

If you are coming here for Kumar, you will not be disappointed. But if you are here for the food, than there’s nothing to look forward to. The Indian food was quite good, but everything else was quite blah. The desserts were a failure. I had to return the Basque Burnt Cheesecake because it tasted like the fridge it was kept in. A second piece followed, and it tasted garlicky. The same with the brownie. But again, you don’t come to a pub and expect Michelin standard.
