Zhenjiang was surprised stop for me in China. Never would I thought it would be such a fine place to partake the best of Jiangsu. Miss Zhou’s Restaurant is one of those chains that came from Zhenjiang and serve good Jiangzhe cuisine.
Hearty Appetisers 心水的前菜
1/ 蒜香白切肉 Pork belly in spicy sesame oil
Classic Sichuan starter. I liked the way their pork belly was still crunchy and not overcooked.
2/ 麻油泡腰花 Pig kidney in spicy sesame sauce
Their pig kidney was not smelly and crunchy, very nice.
3/ 二小姐最爱的六月黄（香炒蟹）Mss Er’s favourite June hairy crab in spicy style
This is their #1 bestseller. The crabs are from the restaurant’s own farm. The crabs were fried with rice cakes, garlic, onions and other spices. Why June crab? Typical hairy crab with roe are after the mid-autumn festival. But in June, they just finished moulting before the cold seasons, and they are full and tasty. So it is another fine time to enjoy crab.
4/ 红烧海杂鱼（带鱼、黄鱼、鲳鳊鱼）Braised mixed fish in brown sauce
This was a very generous portion of three types of fish – ribbon fish, yellow croaker and mini pomfrets, cooked in a brown sauce. Some may find these fish not too fancy, but they are delicious and I loved everyone of them.

5/ 蟹粉豆腐煌 Bean curd with crab roe
Around Jiangnan, there are many lakes that have abundant freshwater seafood. Crab roe can now be harvested and pasteurised to be used in other seasons. Cooked with soft bean curd, this is a dish full of umami.
6/ 脆姜红烧肉 Crispy ginger braised pork in brown sauce
I loved their braised pork belly. Not too sweet, and the savoury brown sauce would be great on rice.

7/ 香干肉丝芦蒿 Dried bean curd, pork strips with wormwood
Artemisia is a large, diverse genus of plants with between 200 and 400 species belonging to the daisy family Asteraceae. Common names for various species in the genus include mugwort, wormwood, and sagebrush. Harvested when young, it can be a rather tasty vegetable. Here in Jiangnan, it is found in abundance and often cooked with dried bean curd (豆干) and pork.
8/ 火爆肝尖 Stir-fry pork liver
A rustic dish that was just a simple stir-fry of pork liver, Chinese leeks and ginger. The difficulty was to keep the liver tender (it can overcook very easily) while making sure it remained cooked. Here, it was a bid too cooked.

9/ 菜汤面顺顺 Spatzle with vegetable soup
Their spatzle was a simple flour and egg, and then squeezed into small little spindle shape spatzle. Then it’s cooked in a savoury vegetable soup.
10/ 招牌猪油菜饭 Signature vegetable fried rice with pork crackling
I really loved their signature fried rice. Chopped-up greens with fried with pork lard and then topped with a generous portion of pork crackling. The rice was filled with the satisfying fragrance of pork lard, and the crackling provided the texture and umami.
Historic XiJing Ferry Terminal 西津渡
The restaurant is housed in a historical factory that was a vehicle filter factory 滤清场 built during the early days of the Communist regime (1966) in part of the old XiJin Ferry Terminal historic district 西津渡.
Service in the restaurant was prompt and attentive. The ambiance was the main attraction. Very rustic and comfortable. Ask for the window seats.
