Maru Korean BBQ @ Brisbane

Australian beef is very good, and whenever I am in town I would always try to either have a steak or Korean BBQ. And near QUT in Brisbane is this popular student joint, recommended by a staff from QUT.

Maru Korean BBQ is located just next to a stripper joint ;-), and the BBQ Wagyu Set screamed from the menu at AUD 98 and there’s enough meat for two.

The BBQ wagyu set came with cube roll, strip loin and chuck short rib meat. The meat looked fresh and delicious, and the marbling was around M6+ by the Australian standard (most likely A3/4 by Japanese grading).

Interestingly, there was a layer of baking paper between the grill and meat to prevent grill burn. Not sure if it will affect the cooking. But after a while, it all worked properly and the BBQ was well on the way.

The other great recommendation was their signature original fried chicken. Somehow, the Koreans have taken over the hot wings craze in Asia by storm and there are many hot wings and fried chicken places that sprung up everywhere. But Maru’s original chicken was very good and can stand on its own.

Spicy beef soup

The spicy beef soup was ok, but it could be too salty for most. Goes well with rice, but too much with BBQ as the spicy bean paste was too overpowering.

Service was just so-so, but it was so much value-for-money you can’t complain too much. The clientele was the young and mainly from the local universities so expect a rather rowdy and lively crowd, especially when a couple of shochu is in order.
