GMBG is a big boisterous place—exactly as it should be. A large outdoor stage backs up to a pond. They book decent bands on ticketed nights.
For those who don’t know, Fast N’ Loud is a wildly popular (with men) Dallas-based Discovery Channel show whereon a guy named Richard Rawlings buys old cars, and the boys from his Gas Monkey Garage rebuild them.
Rawlings opened a restaurant in the old Firewater space, near Northwest Highway and I-35, bringing in a GM, Alex Mendonsa, from the Las Vegas House of Blues, and chef David Hollister, whose previous post was Yucatan Taco Stand in Fort Worth.
And the food? It’s large portions of man stuff served on metal trays.
3 meat BBQ combo platter and grits
Quarter slab of ribs, smoked jalapeño pork sausage and black angus brisket, with sides of grits and grilled asparagus and carrots
The brisket and ribs were smoked on-site for 15 hours over post oak. The brisket had a nice, pink smoke ring and peppery crust but was a bit on the dry side which the side of spicy BBQ sauce kicked it up a notch. The ribs were slapped with a liberal amount of BBQ sauce, I loved it so much I bought a bottle home. Sides — fat, crisp grilled asparagus; zingy red chile grits —were all nice but nothing to shout about. The disappointment were the sausages – while the casing was crispy like I liked it, the filling was just peppery and nothing else.
Homemade key lime pie
Key lime pie is an American dessert pie made of Key lime juice, egg yolks, and sweetened condensed milk in a pie crust. The traditional Conch version uses the egg whites to make a meringue topping. The dish is named after the small Key limes that are naturalized throughout the Florida Keys.
Their homemade Key lime pie was delicious and very tart. Didn’t know what to expect, this is
Bread pudding churros with vanilla ice cream
The bread pudding churros were the bomb! They were light and fluffy inside with a sugar encrusted outside, and tasted exactly like bread pudding….yum!
The venue is also famous for live bands come in to play at the huge outdoor stage.
It was a quite evening when we were there, but many have said it’s better on the weekends. Recommended only if you are a fan of the show.
