Paulaner Bräuhaus in Shanghai and Singapore

Paulaner Bräuhaus is the most successful German restaurant chain in Shanghai and boasts multiple grandiose outlets on both sides of the Huangpu, including one in Xintiandi. How does it compare to other Paulaner locations?

Paulaner Bräuhaus Xintiandi

Paulaner Bräuhaus is the most successful German restaurant chain in Shanghai and boasts multiple grandiose outlets on both sides of the Huangpu, including one in Xintiandi.

Xintiandi 新天地

Located in the center of Shanghai City and south of Middle Huaihai Road, Xintiandi is a fashionable pedestrian street composed of old-style Shikumen residences and modern architecture.

It retains the antique walls, tiles and exterior of the Shikumen residences 石库门 of old Shanghai while embodies a totally modern world in its interior. Roaming here, you will get the taste of both Shanghai in the 1920s and the modern lifestyle of urbanites of the 21st century.

CCP First People’s Congress Address

The Shikumen residences originally appeared in the mid of the 19th century as a product of combining Chinese and Western architecture styles, usually having a vaulted stone door frame with Chinese style carvings and a wooden door. It was also among these residences the first China Communist Party People’s Congress 第一次全国代表大会会址 was held.

The Food

From Top Left clockwise :

  • Mixed Sausage Platter of Nürnberger Sausages, Grilled Cheese Krainer Sausages, Vienna Sausages and Grilled Pork Sausage with Sauerkraut and Mashed Potatoes. I am glad these würst are authentic and come with the crunchy shell that I loved when I had my first German sausages back in Munich;
  • Beef Consommé with Meat Strudel and Vegetable Julienne – it has the typically strong beef consommé base which I like but the strudel ruined everything;
  • Potato Soup – Kartoffelsuppe is a traditional German soup but they have done a rather poor job at it. You can only taste the cream and nothing else;
  • Seafood Spaghetti with Assorted Seafood, Cherry Tomatoes, Fresh Basil, Garlic and Tomato Sauce. The sauce is like a sweet tomato sauce with frozen seafood. Give it a miss;
  • Grilled Pork Knuckle with Sauerkraut and Mashed Potatoes – quite disappointed that it was all chopped up instead of the whole knuckle.

Paulaner Bräuhaus Raffles Changning

Saint Mary’s Girls’ Middle School campus (1923)

The restaurant is located in a two-storied free standing building at Raffles City Changning. The building itself got rebuild after the historical Saint Mary’s Girls’ Middle School campus originated in the year 1923. The interior atmosphere combines modern yet simple design with touches of rustic, traditional furniture and décor.

Interior

Both floors are equipped with cozy semi private rooms inspired by Bavaria’s mountain chalets, suitable for personal get together and celebrations up to about 60 persons. The highlight of the second floor’s alpine-inspired cabin is a historical copper brew kettle, which was used to produce more than 6,000 brews before.

Bar

The comfy beer garden is offering space to lean back and relax during warmer days of the year.

The Food

From Top Left clockwise :

  • Swabian Cheese Spätzle with Sautéed Onions. Very rich and authentic. Loved it;
  • Grilled Pork Knuckle with Sauerkraut and Mashed Potatoes. Obviously it was much better than the ones back in Xintiandi but that was years ago;
  • Pork Schnitzel – Thinly flattened pork escalope, breaded and fried golden brown with butter, served with lemon and French fries. The crust is crispy and the pork moist and tender;
  • Mixed Sausage Platter of Nürnberger Sausages, Grilled Cheese Krainer Sausages, Vienna Sausages and Grilled Pork Sausage with Sauerkraut and Mashed Potatoes. Same consistency.

Paulaner Bräuhaus Singapore

From Top Left clockwise :

  • Mixed Sausage Platter of Nürnberger Sausages, Grilled Cheese Krainer Sausages, Vienna Sausages and Grilled Pork Sausage with Sauerkraut and Mashed Potatoes. Somehow the portion is bigger than in China;
  • Escargots – no longer on the menu, it was actually quite good;
  • Pretzel – The traditional symbol of Bavarian cuisine, the bread is not exactly delicious. More as a novelty for Princess to be introduce to German food;
  • Grilled Pork Knuckle with Sauerkraut and Mashed Potatoes. This was worse than the ones I had in Shanghai.

All in all, the experience was not the best of the Paulaners. Especially the pork knuckle, it was the worst among the three. The sauerkraut was, however, the best among the three.
