Switch by Timbre X @ Bras Basah

Phase 3 of Circuit Breaker, after the family lunch, here’s the family dinner with the young ones. They have all grown up so we can all go to a pub now.

Located in the arts and heritage district of Bras Basah, Switch by Timbre X is a bilingual Mandarin and English live music venue and restro-bar by Timbre Group.

It is in essence a gastrobar – bistro with a well-stocked bar. The cocktails were pretty amazing, including the mocktails.

Small Plates

Truffle Fries

Truffle Fries

Deep-fried straight cut fries tossed with truffle salt & truffle oil served with truffle mayonnaise

We ordered a normal fries too, and both tasted the same.

Timbre Chicken Wings

Timbre Chicken Wings

Chicken wings marinated with in-house seasoning, deep fried till golden brown

Very well marinated and full of flavour, but I found they were a bit too dry. But they were excellent bar food.

Crackling Garlic and Salt Roasted Pork Belly

Crackling Garlic and Salt Roasted Pork Belly

Crispy skin of pork belly slices served with belachan chilli and lime

OK, sio bak in a bar, what could go wrong? The only fault – too few pieces per serving.

Guiness Braised “Kong Bak Bao”

Guiness Braised “Kong Bak Bao”

Guiness braised pork belly, local lettuce, mentaiko mayonnaise in fried manto

Here’s the “innovative” take on the kong bak pau – the pork belly had a Guiness stout glaze which gave it a rather bitter taste. Thanks but no thanks.

Mains

Hawaiian Pizza

Hawaiian Pizza

Smoked BBQ sauce, sweet pineapples, shaved honey ham and crispy bacon, topped with melted mozzarella cheese

Very thin crust, with very little toppings.

“Hae Bee Hiam” Pizza

“Hae Bee Hiam” Pizza

Shrimp, sauté onions, “hae bee hiam”, aioli, melted mozzarella cheese, scallions

Could not taste the hae bee hiam (dried shrimp chilli) on the pizza.

Char “Hokkien” Spaghetti Mee

Char “Hokkien” Spaghetti Mee

Spotted prawn, squid and spaghetti braised in rich prawn stock, topped with slices of crispy pork belly and homemade belachan chilli

Surprisingly, it worked, the hokkien spaghetti was a play on the fried hokkien prawn noodles.

Lobster Stir Fried Laksa Spaghetti

Lobster Stir Fried Laksa Spaghetti

Rich coconut laksa sauce, soft boiled egg, sprouts, dried bean curd

Not much laksa taste, and it was dry like a mee siam.

150 Days Grain Fed Angus Ribeye Steak

150 Days Grain Fed Angus Ribeye Steak

Mini crispy potato rosti, lemongrass pumpkin purée, asparagus, served with red wine sauce

Dessert

Profiteroles and Lychee Dome

Profiteroles and Lychee Dome

Bite-size profiteroles with a core of latte macchiato cream coated in white chocolate finished with coffee icing crystal; Dome-shaped petit gateau of rose sponge and lychee mousse with raspberry coulis draped in a velvety pink glaze

The profiteroles were well received, but the lychee gateau was not.

Dome Crunchy Chocolate

Dome Crunchy Chocolate

Dome-shaped petit gateau of Belgian chocolate mousse a core of crunchy praline draped in a rich chocolate glaze and decorated with praline stripes

But the chocolate gateau was so good, we ordered second helping.

Eclectic decor

Switch by Timbre X is open with mandatory safe-distancing guidelines in place. So that meant that the live band would not be playing for some time. But the bar food and drinks should be enough reason for party of eight to come and relax in the laid back atmosphere.
