Fancy some kangaroo and crocodile meat while attending a conference in Melbourne? This eatery along the riverside will satisfy your craving for some roadkill.

Located right next to the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre, The General Assembly wants you to experience Melbourne’s iconic laneways within this South Wharf riverside pub.

And you can either order from the QR code menu, or from a human being behind the bar. And since we could not find anyone behind the bar, I shall put my faith one more time in this Covid-forced technology. It’s just like Uber Eats (or Grab Food for my Singaporean friends), no frills and no service. And then food appeared like magic.
Fried Cauliflower

Fancy a mayonnaise made without eggs? Enter veganaise, a mayonnaise substitute using rapeseed oil, brown rice syrup and lots of salt. Give me the regular thing anytime. And the fried cauliflower was delicious if you were wondering that I ate it without the dip anyway.
Kangaroo Skewers

Saltbush leaves are fleshy with a salty, herbal flavour, and are very versatile. Use fresh leaves in salads or as a bed for roasting meats (it’s great with lamb) or fish, toss them into stir-fries, dip them in batter and fry them, or use the dried leaves as a seasoning; ground dried leaves can be a substitute for salt. Kangaroo is a very lean meat, but when done right taste better than beef. And they had nailed it with the skewers paired with fresh saltbush.
Steak Day Wednesday

Everyday they feature a special on the lunch time menu and Wednesday was a steak. And it was not just an inferior piece of meat, they offered their regular 250g grass-fed porterhouse (sirloin) as the cut of the day. The steak was cooked beautifully though, just the right amount of fats and was very tasty. It came with a little piece of garlic paprika butter for the steak which you would regret if you have missed it. It elevated the piece of meat to a steakhouse quality cut.
Afterthoughts

The food was pretty good. But I would enjoy it more if there was some kind of service. If I want to serve myself, I would have stayed at the buffet at the conference.
