Simple Fare

Ming Fa Fishball Noodles 明发鱼圆面 @ Upper Thomson

It’s 6am and we were looking for a place for breakfast. Thankfully Ming Fa is already opened at that hour.

Always hearty to have a bowl of hot soup in the morning, but surprise surprise we could not find a coffeeshop with a bak kut teh opened at 6am on a Sunday. So we settled to bak chor mee. And I knew the perfect place to get my bak chor mee fix.

Ming Fa has been selling noodles since 1946, and they opened this main store in 2004. It used to be 24 hours operations and would be a favourite for all the night owls like us. They sell Teochew style fishball noodles and bak chor mee.

Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles with Prawns (Dry)

I ordered one of their signature choices, the bak chor mee tar or dry minced meat noodles. Noodles were cooked to al dente springiness and tossed in chilli, oil and vinegar. It was served with braised mushrooms, minced meat, meatball, fishballs and prawns. The only complaint was that the pig liver was overcooked.

Mee Pok Dry

I especially love how the noodles are evenly coated with the chilli that really packs a punch at 7am in the morning. Too bad there was not enough pork crackling, else it would have been a perfect bowl.

Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles with Prawns (Soup)

The minced meat noodles are also available in soup version, but I always order the dry version because I find them tastier.

Fish Dumplings and extra Fishballs

I always order extra handmade fish dumplings with fillings of minced meat and fishballs because I find them springy and delicious.

With the Thomson-East Coast Line, good eats in Upper Thomson area are within reach for those who do not live in Upper Thomson. So it makes going Ming Fa easier for me.
