The story of Korean BBQ on Peck Seah Street continues with this high end restaurant called Story One. First time I walked past I thought it was a Korean hair salon, but it is a really legit KBBQ.
Story One 이야기 하나 (Iyagi Hana) is the high end ala carte Korean BBQ restaurant under the Don Dae Bak 돈대박 group. Not to be confused with First Story (Iyagi Hana) in Gangnam, whose claim to fame was a KBBQ place for singles.
This is the first KBBQ in Singapore that I have been to feature a sophisticated smoke extractor on the table top that is detachable and in the shape of a faucet. And a cast iron warmer for the beef, another nice touch for keeping the beef warm.
We came here for lunch with a business associate. We ordered a set meal that consisted of 4 different kinds of cuts and flavours of beef. It came with banchan and a doenjiang jjigae 된장찌개. The set was for two pax and we had four pax, so I ordered a tteokmanduguk as well.
- Kkagttug Galbisal 깍뚝 갈비살 | Cube Cut Prime Rib
- Saeusal 새우살 | Ribeye Cap
- LA Galbi 갈비 | LA Prime Rib
- Jumulleog Galbisal 주물럭 갈비살 | Aging Secret Sauce Prime Rib
- 꽃게 된장찌개 Doenjiang Jjigae | Blue Crab Bean Paste Stew
- Sagol-yugsu Tteogmandusgug 사골육수 떡만둣국 | Sliced Rice Cake and Dumpling Soup
The meal came with four different condiments for you to dip the beef with. There’s the Himalayan pink salt, a soy bean chilli paste, freshly grated horseradish that reminded me of wasabi and a fresh mustard seed (my favourite).
Kkagttug Galbisal 깍뚝 갈비살 | Cube Cut Prime Rib
This is one of their best cut. Although not Hanwoo, this Australian wagyu prime rib cut into cubes has great marbling.
The beef was grilled at table side over the charcoal grill expertly by the waitress.
In a recent trip to Seoul, a chef at a hanwoo KBBQ place told me that lettuce is not served in the high-end restaurants because Koreans like to enjoy the beef as it is.
Saeusal 새우살 | Ribeye Cap
This is a very interesting cut from the ribeye that is literally called saeusal 새우살 “the shrimp meat” because of the shape.
LA Galbi 갈비 | LA Prime Rib
This diagonally cut prime ribs that originated from Los Angeles is aptly named LA Galbi. Usually served marinated, Story One has their own secret sauce that is really delicious – not too sweet or savoury.
Jumulleog Galbisal 주물럭 갈비살 | Aging Secret Sauce Prime Rib
For those who do not like the bones in the LA galbi can choose this one without the rib bone. Marinated with the same secret sauce, this is a really good eat.
꽃게 된장찌개 Doenjiang Jjigae | Blue Crab Bean Paste Stew
The soup had kkochge 꽃게 blue swimmer crab in it, which gave the soup a lot of umami.
And there was enough soup for four persons.
Sagol-yugsu Tteogmandusgug 사골육수 떡만둣국 | Sliced Rice Cake and Dumpling Soup
This traditional dish is made from boiling thinly sliced non-glutinous rice cake in beef broth (in this case) and served various garnishes and mandu 만둣 dumplings. Tteokguk 떡국 (rice cake soup) is the first meal in the morning of the Korean New Year (which is the same day as the Chinese New Year). Korean believes that one ages for one more year when a person eats tteokguk; the round shape and white colour of tteokguk symbolises “longevity” and “purity” respectively.
The meal was excellent, especially the banchan; I loved the kimchi which was house-made and not too sour. The service was top-notch and even better, we don’t smell like BBQ after the meal. Not cheap, but definitely worth the price. Recommended.
