Meeting up an old classmate that has migrated to Perth. Arranged to meet in town for dinner and she booked this French restaurant that he heard so much about, Sentinel in St George Terrace.

Sentinel Bar & Grill is a welcome addition to the burgeoning dining and small bar scene in the Perth CBD. Paying homage to the style of New York and the intrinsic food culture of France, Sentinel Bar & Grill is a sophisticated restaurant and bar, encompassing breakfast, lunch, dinner, all day dining.

Dinner is a set meal affair – you have to choose a main with a dessert or appetiser. Of course if you have a larger appetite, you can opt for three courses. No, there’s no a la carte menu.
Warm Bread Roll, Celtic sea salt whipped butter

Quite strange for me to pay for bread, especially when it wasn’t outstanding. And they served whipped butter, despite my friend asking for normal butter.
Amuse bouche

Next, the waitress came with the amuse bouche, a small target with Brazilian nut and pâte mousse. Quite dismal in the amount of filling for the tartlet.
Confit Pork Belly, marsala squash puree, fennel, pears, pepitas, pomegranate jus

My friend went for the confit pork belly that was sticky and full of flavours. The skin was crispy, but because it was so smooched with the sticky sauce, it went soft too quickly. It was nevertheless a very busy plate with shaved fennel and pumpkin mash spiced with marsala.
Local Burrata, avocado puree, heirloom tomato, peach salad, chardonnay dressing, basil oil

I went for the burrata, very creamy and good. The rest of the place was like a fruit salad, with halved heirloom cherry tomatoes, dollops of avocado cream and dressed with basil oil and red wine vinegar.
Angel Hair Pasta, blue swimmer crab, prawns, tomato sugo, chilli, parsley

Their angel hair pasta was a hit with regulars, and tonight’s version was with the blue swimmer crab. I could not make out big chucks of the crab, they disintegrated into the tomato-based sauce. The umami was spiked with bits of fresh cut red chilli and refreshing parsley.
Mahogany Creek Chicken Breast, aubergine caponata, cauliflower creme, carrot crisps, jus

My friend ordered the chicken breast. Looked boring.
Hazelnut & White Chocolate Panna Cotta, watermelon granita, coca soil, passionfruit coulis

For dessert, I went for the panna cotta that turned out to be like a Peranakan kueh lapis in texture. It wasn’t as described, which replaced the coca soil with white chocolate snow. Perhaps it was close to closing time, so they just used whatever they had.
Lemon curd tart, raspberry mouse, white chocolate snow, coconut sorbet

My friend had the lemon curd tart served with a ball of coconut sorbet. She said the sorbet reminded of the ice cream we get from the ice cream man that came to our school often.
Aftehoughts
Food was solid and generous portioned. The service was the highlight of the evening. I bought a bouquet of flowers for her and she got me a gift too. The table was too small, and the waitress took care to make sure we got our stuff sorted so that we had enough space for dinner. The place was packed for a Friday evening, so we had to make do with a rather uncomfortable environment. Recommended for the service and food.
