Good Eats

Galpão Gaucho @ Napa

One day after some heavy wine tasting, I was craving for some serious amount of meat after seeing this Brazilian steakhouse along St Helena Highway 29.

Traditional Brazilian Gauchos grew up preparing, cooking and serving delicious cuts of meat and savoury side dishes for their families, friends, and guests for any celebration or gathering, and continue to do so today on family farms and homes throughout Southern Brazil.

In most areas of the world outside of Brazil, a rodízio restaurant refers to a Brazilian-style steakhouse restaurant. Customers pay a fixed price (preço fixo), and waiters bring samples of food to each customer repeatedly throughout the meal, until the customers signal that they have had enough to eat.

Hearts of palm, artichoke hearts, sweet beets, asparagus, imported cheeses, and cured meats are only some of almost 40 items that the gourmet salad bar offers.

Picanha with salads

The menu is inspired by the Gaucho culture and the authentic dining tradition of the Brazilian cowboy – grilled meats and fresh salads. With 17 different cuts of meat, ranging from beef, pork, chicken, lamb, and fish, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Even before you start hitting the salad buffet, the waiter came back quickly with delicious cheese bread called pão de queijo. Be careful, they are addictive and if you do not want to spoil your appetite, I urge you to resist.

And then it was followed by garlic mashed potatoes and caramelised bananas. I had to skip the black bean stew and traditional rice just to keep going.

Picanha (top sirloin) is the noble part of the sirloin and their signature cut. and it was a test of any churrasco. Contra-filé / Ancho (ribeye) cut with the heaviest marble was seasoned with a pepper blend, then slow cooked to tender, juicy perfection. Costela de Cordeiro (lamb chops) are skewered in individual portions, bathed in a white wine seasoning.

From the moment you take your seat in a Brazilian steakhouse, it’s an experience to be remembered — flip your card to green and get ready for a true Brazilian meal! You are full even before you realised it.
