Yuyi BKT 友谊肉骨茶 @ Kuala Lumpur

There are many bak kut teh restaurants in the area of Jalan Imbi, the most famous of which should be Sun Fong, while the other one with an equally long history is Yuyi. The standard of Sun Fong has deteriorated a lot, so we came to try Yuyi today.

Yuyi (which translates to “friendship”) is a store with a history of more than 20 years in Malaysia. After learning this craft from a famous Bak Kut Teh in Kuala Lumpur, the boss began to run his own shop.

Yuyi Bak Kut Teh is quite famous among the Hong Kong and Taiwanese entertainment circles, with many stars coming here whenever they perform in Kuala Lumpur or Genting. You can see on their Wall of Fame the familiar faces.

The Klang-style Bak Kut Teh in Malaysia is full of the taste of Chinese herb, as opposed to peppery Teochew-style BKT in SIngapore. Yuyi’s version came with ribs, pork belly, pig stomach, pig intestines and lean pork all cooked in their signature broth with canned button mushrooms – a familiar taste that I longed for.

Beside BKT, they also sell braised pork trotters. The braise was too sweet for my preference. And the braising time was not long enough that the trotter had not absorbed the flavours.

Instead of the usual belachan chilli, we decided to sautéed the kang kong with preserved tofu, which is a very Hong Kong way of stir-frying vegetables. Delicious.

I have to admit Sun Fong does the pork intestine better. Their version was a bit bitter and overcooked.

Besides the soup version, they also prepare the dry version. My colleague loved the dry version, but I had not acquire that taste.

Since young, I love pork kidney but it is very difficult to prepare organ because of its organic purpose. You have to thoroughly clean it through soaking multiple time to rid the urine smell. Their pork kidney in yellow wine was delicious, no smell and crunchy. The yellow wine preparation method was perfect.

Quite simply this place has become my go to place for BKT in KL.
