The first time I tried this restaurant back in 2012, I was overwhelmed by the delicious Southern fried chicken. Finally I returned and managed to make a record of the delicious food here.
I would go to the Yardbird Southern Table in the Venetian whenever I go for my annual user conference. Fried chicken to me is comfort food and something that associates me with Southern cuisine, where I spent most part of my early working years.
This restaurant is a concept of the acclaimed restaurant and chef John Kunkel. It serves Southern cuisine and their signature dish is fried chicken.
The decor resembles a barn house setting, but it is modern with many pop culture icons decorating the walls. The open kitchen hustle and bustle with activities as the place was packed just before the showtimes in Vegas.
Chicken & Waffles
For the main course, we ordered the usual Chicken & Waffles to share. Given the experience I had with American portions. I double-checked with the waiter, and he said that “it’s half a chicken”, i.e. 4 pieces. It consisted of the signature “Lewellyn’s Fine Fried Chicken” – 4 pieces of a chicken that consisted of a drumstick, a thigh, a breast and a wing. It also came with chilled spiced watermelon, and an entire Vermont sharp cheddar cheese waffle with bourbon maple syrup.
The chicken was as good as it gets. They were deep fried to perfection as always, and the chicken sizes were incredible. On the inside, it was dripping with meat juice as I bit into crispy skin. And to balance the saltiness, there’s the compressed watermelon that has been lightly spiced.
We ordered another side of Crispy Brussels, Brussels sprouts that has been over-baked with spiced honey. Absolutely delicious. We finished everything on our plates.
There’s always a long queue at the door, so I do recommend that you reserve a table before you come. Unless you are the VVIP of the Venetian, I don’t think you will make it in time for the show if you just pop up. Gratuity is already added to the bill so you are not obliged to add a tip, unless the server was really outstanding.
