Hyang Yeon @ Tanjong Pagar (2024)

We went back to the office first time for the year and went for a lunch together at our canteen.

Hyang Yeon 향연 (Hanji 饗宴) in Korean means “hold a banquet; invite people to the place of great food”. My office is just upstairs, so Hyang Yeon has more or less become our canteen; they serve very affordable and huge portion set lunches which are appreciated by our big-eaters engineers. 

This lunch time being our first gathering for 2024, we ordered the 888mm 양념돼지갈비 888mm Marinated Pork Collar at $88. So many “eights”, this year sure “huat ah”. This item was from the dinner menu.

Not sure if it was 888mm long, but there were enough pork belly for 2-3 persons, but it was sufficient to feed 4-5 if you order other dishes as well.

Despite the shorthanded service team, the waiters tagged team to cover all the tables in grilling all the meat for us. And they knew exactly how to bring out the maximum flavours of each cut of meat. I don’t know what pork was used, but it wasn’t Kurobuta or Berkshire. But pork collar is pork collar; the distribution of fats and lean mean ensured that it was perfect for BBQ.

It also came with 7-8 different banchan, and for lunch time they were mainly kimchi and other pickled vegetables. And of course, the banchan can be refilled upon request.

I didn’t had the time to take a photo of their delicious steamed egg 계란찜 gyeran-jjim. The Korean steamed egg is not chawanmushi; it is similar to what my mom would do at home.

Along a short street of less than 1km, Peck Seah Street in Tanjong Pagar has 3 Korean BBQ restaurants, not counting another 4 more Korean restaurants that do not specialise in BBQ. And right behind us along Tanjong Pagar Road, there’s plenty more. We are so spoiled of choices, so for Hyang Yeon to survived all these years it meant something. This was a delicious meal, the price was reasonable, and the service was attentive. Recommend to reserve a table before coming.
