Simple Fare

Mekong Pho @ Melbourne (2024)

Who says you cannot teach old dogs new tricks? Pho Bo Ga Mekong has surprised me once more with new ingredients in their pho.

The same counter after all these years

Mekong is more a nostalgic place that reminded me when things were simpler and a bowl of pho was really huge and comforting. The only decor around the store was still the fading pictures of famous actors or actresses or politicians having bowls of Pho at this restaurant.

Phở is a world renowned traditional Vietnamese beef noodle soup, which can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The word Phở is pronounced ‘fuh’ and is said with an upward inflection of the voice, as if you were asking a question!

This new Phở option is called tả pín lù, which is borrowed from Hong Kongers’ the term of endearment for the Chinese hotpot. It came loaded with beef brisket, beef balls, tendon, tripe, sausage, bone marrow, chicken drumstick, giblet, liver, heart, pretty much everything they offered as ingredients. But the piece de resistance was pork blood jelly, and finally it was available in Australia! It was pretty authentic and I wanted to order additional portion of it but couldn’t.

Another appetiser that I haven’t tried before was their fried chicken ribs. I didn’t know chicken ribs can be cut this way and deep fried. Will try for my harjeonggai recipe next time.

Packed so tightly with vermicelli and huge prawns, these rice rolls were best eaten with the savoury nutty dip that came with them.

Over the years, there are many other (better) pho noodle shops that have popped up in Australia, but Mekong remained an Australian institution, an unassuming giant; simply some of the best pho in Melbourne.
