We only have 30 mins for lunch before our user conference in Akihabara, so we went with something really quick and efficient.

Kaitenzushi 回転寿司 or conveyor belt sushi is a convenient and affordable type of sushi restaurant characterised by the conveyor belt that winds through the restaurant carrying plates of Edomae sushi. This particular type of sushi is a rather modern Japanese cuisine initially created by the Edo (old name for Tokyo) fast food businesses during the 1820’s.

The sushi were all very fresh, but they are not the top quality fish. With the weak yen, most of the sushi were less than SGD 1.00 per plate, so much cheaper than Singapore! You can imagine that we went crazy with the number of plates we ate.
It’s said that nigiri sushi 握壽司 was invented by Hanaya Yohei, a sushi artisan in the late Edo (1603-1868) Period, and now has become perhaps Japan’s most traditional “fast-food.” Known worldwide, nigiri sushi is essentially neta which can be sliced fish or other itemsplaced atop a handcrafted (nigiri) piece of shari (steamed white rice flavoured with sweetened vinegar).
Gunkan 軍艦 is a form of sushi named after the Gunkan, or Navy Battleship. Similar to nigiri sushi, an oblong round piece of shari is wrapped with nori )dried seaweed sheet) forming the shape of a boat. The gunkan was invented as an ideal platform to hold and give shape to delicate sushi items such as salmon caviars, sea urchin and minced tuna.

They also serve specialty sushi, like this limited availability anago sushi. Everything was delicious for a sushi restaurant of this level.

You can eat to your heart’s content without worrying about the price. Lots of locations in Japan.
