Qingpeng Steamed Seafood 青蓬海上捞 @ Shenzhen (2025)

Seafood is one of nature’s best offer for the dining table. All you need is fresh seafood, and then all you need is pressurised steam.

Qingpeng Steamed Seafood 青蓬海上捞 has become my regular restaurant for my seafood fix whenever I am back in Shenzhen.

Haishanglao 海上捞 was rebranded to Qingpeng. But the formula remains the same – take fresh, live seafood and clean them; with minimal preparation (add garlic, vermicelli and herbs), present and steam them in special built-in pressure steamer at the table.

You don’t really need any condiments. But if you really do, there’s a sauce bar that you can make your own concoction of condiment, together with some side dishes and fruits. But they now also provide the service to premix the condiments and served the fruits and side dishes at the table for you.

Before and after

And after steaming for different duration of time depending on the type of seafood, they came out perfect as the waitresses are all very well-trained. Most of the seafood are naturally sweet and filled with umami from the sea.

The highlight of dinner here is always the steamed king crab 帝王蟹. The king crab that is always sold at a heavy discounted price. The seafood in the store is temporarily maintained with non-polluting seawater, and the store has always adhered to the rule that the live seafood in the store should not exceed 48 hours before they are sold.

I love eating the crab here, they always make sure everything has been properly processed to ease the trouble of getting to the meat.

There’s enough crab for everyone, and it tend to get a bit boring after your fifth section of the legs. But it was sweet nectar from the sea and you cannot get any fresher than this.

And the crab roe is mixed with whipped eggs and steamed in its shell. I found a new way to eat this, ie to take the roe and make fried rice, but that’s only available in Korea.

Besides their signature king crab, there’s the marsh prawn 基围虾 that I will always order because of its sweetness. It was a misnomer that many thought it was a species of prawns, but they are actually marsh prawns (metapenaeus ensis) raised in Guangdong area inside traditional tidal shrimp pond (locally known as gei wai 基围 in Cantonese).

And at the end, there’s the porridge to enjoy. All the natural juices of the seafood dripped into the porridge that was cooked with pressurised steam. Delicious.

Reservation recommended, especially if you want certain seafood; the popular items like some of the clams and marsh prawns are alway sold out before 9pm. Open till late at night.
