Chen Pengpeng Goose 陈鹏鹏卤鹅饭店 @ Shenzhen (2024)

This is one of the main branches of Chen Pengpeng, my go-to Teochew braised goose fix in Shenzhen. They are not the best, but just like McD, they deliver consistent, dependable tasty food.

Chen Peng Peng Braised Goose was founded in Shenzhen, so it’s got the innovative and risk taking DNA, very much like this young city. Wearing casual straw hats, white T-shirts and blue jeans as well as blue aprons, the young waiters and waitresses are always energetic and attentive.

The backstory was that there was this gentlemen from Swatow called Yu Zhuangzhong 余壮忠 who started his braised goose stall called RiRiXiang 日日香. It was so popular that Chen Peng Peng 陈鹏鹏 went to try it. Chen Peng Peng was an executive of Sibei Oat Noodles 西贝莜面 for China South and a veteran in the F&B business. He saw the business opportunity, went to Yu and asked for the franchising rights to the brand. He started the first RiRiXiang in Shenzhen in 2016. Then Yu saw it was so successful, decided to take back the franchise in 2017.

A court case ensued and Chen has to forego the trademark. However, he managed to change all the franchises into Chen Peng Peng Braised Goose overnight on Dec 2017 and continued operations without missing a heartbeat. And as they say, the rest is history.

The goose blood pudding was very smooth and flavourful, and this time I ordered an entire portion to satisfy my cravings. I don’t know why I like them so much. Maybe it’s because we cannot get them anymore in Singapore.

The last time I ordered Teochew-style deep fried meat rolls 粿肉, they were overtired. This time it was done perfectly. And they improved the recipe with more turnips, giving it a nice crunch.

I ordered a quarter portion of the braised lion-head goose, and specifically asked for the lower quarter consisting the thigh and drumstick. This portion in my opinion is more tender and moist than the breast meat.

Oyster omelette 蚝仔烙 is another Teochew classic, and the versions in China have deviated to suit local tastes. This one has more egg than the tapioca starch, but it still has the crunch of the Swatow version.

Double boiled black chicken with coconut 椰子炖乌鸡 is a favourite soup among ladies. Darling likes the sweetness in this double-boiled soup. Me, not so much.

And to cater to the migrant tastes of Shenzhen, they have introduced grilled items 烧烤 to their menu. The prawns are grilled with a mix of spices which I did not really like but many locals grow up with this taste. I would recommend you go to a specialist BBQ place, I only ordered this because Darling has not grown to love the braised goose taste that I grew up with.

Teochew food is my comfort food, as this is the region my ancestors came from and the food I grew up with. I will never pass up a chance to have Teochew cuisine wherever I am. And Chen Pengpeng is a reliable choice for me. Multiple locations around the city at very convenient spots around major shopping malls.
