Brauhaus @ Novena (2025)

It is one of my favourite pub in Singapore, and I come here once in a while to enjoy a nice cold German beer. Prost!

Brauhaus Restaurant & Pub is the oldest German pub in Singapore! Established since 1989, Brauhaus was the first German Restaurant & Pub to open in Singapore. Owner/Founder/Chef Michael Chuah worked at a German restaurant in Ginza in his younger days but it was themed parties that he used to host in the guest house he lived at which inspired this beer aficionado to open Brauhaus upon his return to Singapore.

One of its kind in Singapore, Brauhaus exudes an old charm with its wooden nicotine-stained ceilings and rustic german décor. Tucked at the corner of United Square Shopping Mall, it can quite difficult to navigate from inside the mall. But once you get to the outdoors in the basement, you can find it on the right hand corner (opposite corner of Starbucks). Outdoors are pet friendly and there’s live music from Mondays to Saturdays.

German Potato | Schwabischer Kartoffelsalat

The ingredients of German potato salad, or Schwabischer Kartoffelsalat, are pretty different to a classic potato salad. A tangy vinegar sauce replaces the mayonnaise; and the rest of the condiments are mustard, salt, and black pepper. Princess loved it, it was quite different from the Japanese style potato salad we always make at home for gatherings.

Pretzel | Brezel

The last time I was here, there were out of pretzel, or Brezel. These are not those thin sticks that you buy from Glico, but the bread twisted into a distinctive knot-like shape from Germany. Its origin is often attributed to Germany, specifically to the region of Bavaria, although its precise beginnings are somewhat debated.

Goulash Stew | Rindergulash

Wholesome ingredients and melt-in-your-mouth tender chunks of meat makes eating German goulash, or Rindergulash, is an intense experience of awesome proportions with layers upon layers of flavours. German goulash is also typically made with red wine, sometimes with beer (in Bavaria), whereas traditional Hungarian goulash contains neither. And for their love of potatoes, it is ironic that the German goulash has no potato either.

Pork Cutlet | Weiner Schnitzel

The dish is protected under Austrian law, and—if it is to be called Wiener schnitzel—it must be made with veal. However many other versions existed elsewhere. The bastardised version was made with thinned, breaded, and pan-fried pork cutlet served with a lemon wedge, a mesclun salad and french fries.

Sausage Platter | Würstplätter

What’s the staple of a German pub besides beer? Wursts, sauerkraut und pretzel. They were out of the typical German twisted pretzel, so we just ordered the sausage platter that came with four sausages, sauerkraut and more German potato salad.

Signature Pork Knuckle | Schweinshaxe

The term Schweinshaxe is typically used in the southern parts of Germany, predominantly in Bavaria, and it usually refers to a whole pork knuckle that is roasted for hours until it is thoroughly cooked and the skin becomes golden brown and crispy. Michael flew specially to Germany to learn the perfect roast, the result was succulent meat encased by a crispy crackling shell.

Brauhaus Signature Beehoon

No, they didn’t use the Tulip brand canned pork knuckles. Elevating the Schweinshaxe with an Asian flair, the Pork Knuckle Bee Hoon presents a delightful harmony of flavours. Juicy slivers of delectable meat intertwine with silky strands of bee hoon, creating a symphony of tastes and textures that’s simply irresistible.

If you like hearty German food and biers, this place is a must visit! My watering hole in the younger days, Brauhaus is one of the original pubs and clubs at the basement of United Square. Others are gone, but Brauhaus has survived with its original decor intact.
