Songane 송가네 @ Jalan Besar

Wanted to go to their neighbour for some sakana cuisine, but they don’t do lunch. So we went to this KBBQ place instead.

Songane Korean BBQ looks legit with its hanging copper chimney and built-in charcoal grill in the table. Although the lunchtime crowd was having their lunch specials, I decided to order their BBQ set instead.

Songane has great lunch sets, and decently priced grilled meat sets for the evenings. I picked a grilled beef set for lunch, and that’s OK.

Once the order was placed, the banchan started to arrive. Kimchi was made using their own family recipe and the cucumber marinated with gochujang was outstanding too. Stir-fried anchovy with red chilli paste 고추장멸치볶음  and stir fried fish cake 어묵 볶음 were prepared in house. The banchan were generously refilled when requested.

Oritang 오리탕 or Braised Duck Soup is a Korean soup made by slowly simmering duck with various vegetables and roasted perilla seeds to thicken the dish. It is one of the top favourites in in Gwangju since it’s a specialty of South Jeolla Province with special areas designated just for these restaurants. Very thick and spicy, and if you like roast duck in soup, that’s what you get.

You get to choose either the kimchi pancake or seafood pancake as part of the BBQ set. I highly recommend their haemul pajeon 해물 파전 or seafood pancake – it’s the best one I’ve ever had in Singapore so far as it was super crispy.

First to go on the grill is the sogalbi 소갈비 or short ribs. It is one of the best cuts for Korean BBQ with excellent marbling, and is usually cut about the size of two fingers so it’s not too greasy.

It has a high marbling content, is juicy, succulent and almost melts in your mouth. It is cooked perfectly here and I usually enjoy it with a bit of salt and sesame oil. But you can also wrapped it with the lettuce and garlic/chilli/kimchi provided.

Yangnyeom Galbi 양념갈비 is marinated short ribs and Wang Galbi 왕갈비 is the traditional cut of short rib commonly seen at specialised Korean BBQ restaurants in Korea. And in Singapore you usually only get the first type.

All the meats were grilled for us by the waitress just like in Korea. This saved us the time and guesswork from how long we need to leave the meat on the fire. There’s only one Chinese lady at the front of the house that had to take care of the cash register, top-up the banchan and attend to the grill. I cannot imagine if more than one table orders the BBQ meat.

Bossam 보쌈 or boiled pork belly is a delectable, steamed pork with the side of spicy, sweet, crunchy radish and served with cabbage as ssam or wrap. The pork used is Duroc Pork which resulted in a juicier and springy texture, bursting with amazing flavours

This little Korean BBQ place, runned by this Korean couple, is a best find indeed. Decor is simple, but the food was surprisingly good. The exhaust above the grille makes it a lot less smoky and we don’t leave the restaurant with heavy BBQ meat smells.
