Tulsi Indian Restaurant 羅勒 @ North Point

This is a great little Indian restaurant tucked away in an alley in North Point and the food is very good.

Tulsi, which is basil 罗勒, is a Michelin-recommended Indian restaurant chain that has three branches in Hong Kong. It is led by Indian chef Ravi Jaya Kumar and is famous for its Northern Indian delicacies.

Mr Ravi Snr came to Hong Kong over 35 years ago and started Tulsi with his son, Ravi Jaya Kumar, in 2010. Fast forward, they have 3 restaurants in different locations, and got a Michelin recommendation between 2012-16 for this North Point branch (and their Quarry Bay branch).

The Tsat Tsz Mui branch was almost empty when I visited. Tulsi offers an expected range of Indian dishes and the food is pretty good.

Papadum, Samosa & Tandoori Chicken 瑪沙拉胡椒餅, 咖喱角&天多羅燒雞

First up, some appetisers. The papadum was a lot thicker than the ones I am used to, and the spices were not strong enough. The samosa compensated with its really tasty curry potato filling. The tandoori chicken was juicy and well spice.

Main Course 主食 – Rogan Josh w/ Pulao Rice & Naan 番茄汁羊肉 配印度飯及蒜蓉烤餅

The main course came with one curry, some basmati rice and a piece of plain naan. I wasn’t sure how spicy the curry was, so I ordered a rogan josh, which is midway between devilish hot and baby hot.

Rogan Josh is an Indian lamb curry with a heady combination of intense spices in a creamy tomato curry sauce. The lamb was fall apart tender and packed a serious flavour punch. However the heat wasn’t there, and I needed something to pick up the pace and intensity.

Add-on: Chicken Madras 椰奶咖喱雞

Chicken madras is supposedly a rich, fragrant and relatively hot curry. But blending onion into the curry gave the sauce a thick and sumptuous texture, and a sweet taste.

In terms of spiciness (heat), if vindaloo is a 5-chilli hot, then madras is 4-chilli hot, rogan josh 3-chilli hot, tikka masala 2-chilli hot while your butter chicken is 1-chilli hot. This chicken madras was like butter chicken hot, which was not what I was expecting as I add-on this after the rogan josh.

The curries were not as spicy as expected and not sure whether they had been adjusted to the local palates. What they lacked in heat, they replaced with a complex flavour profile of different spices. But I am not used to sweet curries nevertheless.

Pulao is a one pot rice dish made by cooking fragrant basmati rice with aromatic whole spices, herbs and sometimes stock. When it comes to curry, nothing goes better than basmati rice.

Dessert 甜品 – Cheese Cake 芝士蛋糕

This was something that tasted like it came from the freezer section of the supermarket. The blueberry cheesecake was nothing to shout about.

Mango Lassi 芒果乳酪

Mango Lassi is a popular lassi variety made with Indian yogurt (dahi/ curd), ripe sweet mangoes and cardamoms. This one tasted more like mango juice than a lassi, and there’s no hint of cardamom, as I don’t like this particular spice, I can taste it even it is a minuscule amount.

Despite the slow evening, ehe well-trained staff worked hard, stayed positive and made this place great. The food was decent, but definitely it had been adjusted to local palates. Would come back to try their vindaloo to see if they are any spicier.
