HL Peninsula Garden @ San Francisco

One last place to have dim sum before leaving San Francisco.

HL Peninsula Restaurant is located in South San Francisco off US-101, which provides direct access to San Francisco and the Bay Area and minutes away from the airport. It is right next to another sister restaurant of the same name that caters to banquets.

They offer an authentic Cantonese dining experience that includes classic dim sum, fresh seafood, and seasonal specialties. All these with a view of the runway to look at landing aircrafts.

大排檔豬雜粥 Street Favorite Pork Offal Congee

I was pleasantly surprised by this item on the menu as I always have the impression that Americans (even the local Chinese) do not eat offals. Turned out this was not so. 大排檔豬雜粥 Street Favorite Pork Offal Congee had sliced pig liver, lung and intestines all cooked in a thick, smooth Cantonese style congee, affectionately known as chuk.

豉油皇炒麵 Soy Sauce Chow Mein

I always order the 豉油皇炒麵 Soy Sauce Chow Mein with my chuk, but I could be the only one. Anyone else reading this post also eat their porridge with fried noodles? It needed more soy sauce though.

點心 Dim Sum

Their main attraction is dim sum, and the place is packed on the weekends with families. They were alright, and satisfy the craving when you have spent a long time in the US and need a quick fix before leaving for home.

The lormaigai 糯米雞 this afternoon was a failure as it was rancid, something I didn’t expect here. Usually it was quite good.

惹味蘿蔔牛雜 Beef Offal Stew w/Turnip

Of course they would have ngam zhap 牛雜 or beef offals as the chefs are from Hong Kong. The “turnip” (they are radish, I supposed) was well stewed and the offals were properly cleaned. The braise was very thick and would be perfect with a bowl of plain steamed rice or plain dry egg noodles.

As I make San Francisco my second home, this place has become one of my favourite Chinese restaurants because parking is ample and the food was OK. Portions are American sizes so beware.
