Urban Hideout @ Seletar (2025)

Family gathering and 16 of us looking for an air-con place for dinner, together with our fur baby. There’s only one place to go that I know of.

The Urban Hideout is a pet-friendly human-catering cafe that has everything the pets and their human slaves can enjoy on the menu. The inside can only seat around 20 persons and their pets. So it is highly recommended to reserve if you want your fur baby and yourself to enjoy the air-conditioning. Else you sit outside like me in the sweltering 36˚C heat and humidity of tropical Singapore.

For a pet cafe, they have a serious drink list with good selection of beer and some nice caffeinated selection like this butterfly pea tea with iced lemonade. The original blue drink was turned purple by the lemonade, like litmus testing.

They offer a short half-page of pet’s menu, which included fish, chicken and beef. Everything was not salted and prepped with Doggy’s health in mind. But eating out for Rosie is often a hit-or-miss affair as she is quite picky with her food. This time, she enjoyed the pork meatballs that were accompanied by pumpkin puree.

Besides catering to the flurry babies, the cafe offers an extensive brunch and main course menus for the human slaves.

Truffle Tater Tots

Crispy bite-sized potato hash browns. Truffle oil.

Tater tots are grated potato formed into small cylinders and deep-fried, often served as an appetiser or replacement of fries. They are quite common in the US, but not so much outside as this is almost considered a processed food (read: junk food) by most continental restaurants. I have grown to like it as an appetiser as they are quite tasty and not too heavy like fries.

Spam Fries

Luncheon meat spam fries

Talking about fries, here’s a variation that is made from another famous US processed food – Spam, aka luncheon meat. I was first introduced to it from a Monty Python skit that featured an eatery that served everything with Spam and Vikings who passionately chanted about it. Their chants in the sketch became so loud and repetitive that they muted any other conversations. This was how “spam mail” was born.

Sake Steamed Edamame

Tossed with Japanese Sansho Pepper.

Here’s another appetiser that became quite ubiquitous in all restaurants even though it was an izakaya staple. But many have loaded it with a lot of other junk that it becomes quite horrible. Here, the edamame was tossed with Szechuen chilli pepper and sprinkled with cheese powder. Not quite as bad, but still not my type of appetiser.

“The Overload Burger” Juicy Wagyu Beef Burger

Handmade wagyu beet patty Caramelised onions. Relish. Sauteed mushrooms. Truffle Mayo. Cheddar cheese. Roma tomato. Mesculun Salad. Toasted brioche bun. Fries on side.

I picked the hamburger with a smashed wagyu patty that had been grilled to a nice char and yet juicy on the inside. It was one of the better burgers that you get up north.

Mentaiko Cheese Rosti

House special herbed rosti topped with mentaiko cheese. Choice of protein (sausage)

Rösti is a traditional Swiss potato pancake dish, similar to a hash brown, made from grated potatoes that are fried in a pan until crisp and golden brown. They made it really rich with mentaiko cheese melt over the rosti pancake.

Sous Vide Chicken Chop With Demi Glace And Mash

Chicken chop slow cooked in sous vide to attain a soft tenderness, finished with a fire torch for the char. Traditional homemade demi glace. Buttery mash. House salad.

The chicken chop gave me a lot of inspiration to try making it with my own sous vide kit. The blowtorch was ok, but it was not smoky enough.

Fried Chicken Waffle

Fried chicken chop. Fresh waffle. Maple syrup.

The freshly made Belgian waffle was delicious, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, served with a side of maple syrup. The chicken was a piece of grilled chicken chop, and not fried chicken as written in the menu. Nevertheless the chicken was flavourful and done just right.

Beer Battered Halibut Fish and Chips

Premium Halibut fillets. British classic beer batter. Crispy potato fries and homemade tartar sauce

The beer battered deep fried halibut filet was crispy on the crust, and tender and juicy on the inside. The condiment provided was the classic tartar sauce instead of just garlic mayo that most places provide these days. The fish reminded me of the famous filet-O-fish. This sauce hit the spot, but the best ones were still the ones in those filet-O-fish burgers.

Homeland Roast 1/2 Spring Chicken

Roast chicken baste with a secret sauce. Garlic rice.

Marinated in lemongrass, garlic, and native spices, this tender whole roast chicken is slow-roasted to perfection. Served with fragrant garlic rice, house-made dipping sauce, and seasonal sides with a cup of achara. A soulful homage to Filipino comfort food, reimagined for the modern table. Achara is a traditional condiment of pickled green papaya, carrots and peppers in Filipino cuisine.

Handcrafted Gelato

And as an additional treat for the shimmering hot weather we had recently, Rosie was treated to a doggy blueberry sorbet, which is made from frozen fruit juice. She slurped it up, and we had to pry her off before she finished the whole tub.

Of course, the human have their own choices of delicious gelato and sorbets. We were quite intrigued with the “strange” choices on offer – green apple yakult, After 8 mint chocolate, Earl Grey lavender, bluepea sea salt, Gianduja Rocher (which tasted like Ferrero), etc.

Signature Waffle with Gelato

Freshly made daily. Topped with artisanal handchurned gelato.

Gelato is made with less cream and therefore contains much less fat and sugar compared to traditional ice cream. It is churned at a slow speed and thus has significantly less air, giving it a dense and silky texture. It also has no eggs and is perfect for strict vegetarians.

For a lazy weekend morning with the four-legged pal, this place was pretty good as it had parking. And they have improved (yet again) on the food tremendously since the last time we were here. This place has become our go-to with our fur baby.
