Cafe Layered @ Seoul

Princess and I just had dinner at the nearby Yakitori Mook (first seating) and we were back on the street by 7.30pm. So we adjourned to the next street for our dessert and after-dinner coffee fix.

Cafe Layered is a dessert cafe in Seoul which has an amazing scones and cakes selection. And like many dessert cafes in Seoul, what they have to offer is an Instagrammable experience.

The concept of Cafe Layered was born from the owner’s positive experiences during a trip to the UK, and it has gained substantial popularity on social media platforms.

  • A bouquet of pink roses is placed near a table displaying a yellow cake and decorative candles, complemented by vintage fabric featuring Prince Charles and Lady Diana.

The place is quite big, and empty. The Charles and Diana wedding blanket was a complete turn-off though. This is what Koreans imagine UK is all about – royalties, watercolours, QEII.

The pretty displays and the delicious scones, baked goods and cakes catch the eyes of every visitor. It has the most impressive scones line-up we’ve ever seen. There are 13 different types of English scones (both savoury and sweet) as well as a dozen rustic English cakes on display.

Display of various baked goods and pastries on a table, including scones, cookies, and cakes, with labels indicating names and prices.

The menu at Cafe Layered offers a mouthwatering selection of scones, ranging from sweet to savoury. There are a variety of tasty options to try, such as cranberry cream cheese scones stuffed with a cream cheese filling in a crispy dough, and black sesame ang butter scones that combines black sesame seeds and ang butter to create a unique and delicious taste.

  • A plate of homemade lemon scones topped with creamy icing and lemon slices, surrounded by jars of jam and books in the background.
  • A plate of matcha white chocolate scones topped with cream and green matcha powder, displayed alongside other pastries in a cozy bakery setting.
  • A platter of fluffy onion cream cheese scones topped with green onions, placed in front of a stack of colorful books.
  • A plate of freshly made cream scones topped with golden, flaky crusts and a generous dollop of cream, displayed with a sign indicating their price.
  • A decorative puppy-shaped cake with cream frosting and features resembling a dog, labeled 'Baby Ear/grey puppy Cake'.
  • Two cute dog-shaped cakes with cream frosting, positioned on a red and white speckled tray.

I have never tried so many types of scones when I was studying in the UK, the creations are more Korean imagining what England is like.

Unlike UK, where scones are served with fresh whipped cream on the side, they have combined the cream and scones American “biscuit” style. Not as airy as the English cream, and the scones were quite dry and hard. These scones were not as fantastic as the social media had made them to be. Instagrammable yes, tasty no.

And this was the cake that made the hyperspace went mad about this cafe – the puppy-faced cakes.

Perhaps we were too full from the outstanding yakitori, the cake wasn’t impressive – dried out and crumbly.

The visually appealing scones displays, coupled with the cakes, make it a must-visit destination in Seoul if you need something for your blogpost. But if you are coming for a proper English scone and cream, don’t bother.
