Another wine tasting trip to Napa with Darling, we stopped at our favourite burger joint along the highway in St Helena for my junk food fix.

Founded by brothers Joel and Duncan Gott in St. Helena in 1999 when the two took over and re-launched Taylor’s Refresher, a humble roadside restaurant dating back to 1949, Gott’s Roadside is known for its modern approach to creating California-inspired dishes using locally sourced ingredients.

Gott’s cheeseburgers are made with only the highest-quality, locally-sourced ingredients and have been consistently named some of the very best burgers in America. They start with a third-pound patty of 100% Angus beef (vegetarian-fed so no hormones or antibiotics, ever), tucked into a bun from local Panorama Bakery and topped with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, American cheese, and Gott’s famous secret sauce.

All the burgers are made a la minute after you have ordered. The Niman Ranch beef patties are cooked medium well (a little pink inside when served) unless you ask for another doneness. They wrap them up and serve them in a paper boat, and simply get messy!

As a creature of habit, I also ordered a cup of chili house-made from organic minced and beans incorporated with craft beer and topped with cheddar cheese and chopped green onions (aka scallions). Chili con carne, often shortened to chili, is a spicy stew of Mexican origin containing chili peppers, meat, tomatoes and beans. And often I have problems after eating it and still I order it all the time.

And Darling stuck to her Chicken Kale Caesar made with locally-sourced kale and romaine lettuce tossed with chicken breast, sprinkled with parmesan cheese powder, focaccia croutons, parmesan crisps and finished with Caesar dressing. Not so sure how many calories were there in the dressing and all that cheese though.

And artichokes were in season so I couldn’t resist but ordered a plate. The fresh artichokes (not the canned ones) were breaded and deep fried and served with lime and charred jalapeño mayo dips. And there was one artichoke that was grilled too. Delicious.

Gott’s has expanded to include locations in Napa’s Oxbow Public Market, San Francisco’s Ferry Building and Thrive City at Chase Center, Palo Alto, Walnut Creek, Marin, and a licensed location at San Francisco International Airport.
