Simple Fare

Gu Zao Wei Teochew Minced Meat Mee @ Chong Pang

They were closed for a few months due to the renovation of the coffee shop. And when they reopened, the queues were as long as before.

Gu Zao Wei Teochew Minced Meat Noodle hailed from Food Paradiz foodcourt, and many people would not claim to be a frequent visitor of the sleazy mall 😉 Then they moved to Bras Basah complex, and more people got acquainted with it when they went to buy their assessment books. At this location, they attracted a new batch of customers from the neighbourhood, me being one of them.

The uncle was from the Bras Basah store, and is now training the next generation to take over. I can see him teaching the young man how to portion the dabao quantity properly. I placed my order and still have to wait in queue for another 8 bowls in front of me + some takeaway orders. (Two persons, one ordered 5 bowls, one ordered 3.)

The generous bowl of noodles includes meatball, pork lard, fishcake, fried sole fish, fishball, fish dumpling and Teochew dumpling. The soup was sweet with a clean taste of anchovies and pork. And before serving, they would add a piece of braised pork skin.

I am a creature of habit and will order the mee pok dry without thinking twice. The ingredients were the same as the soup version, and the mee pok (which I would describe as Teochew fettuccine) was blended with the sauce in the bowl, saving you a lot of trouble to get a problem mix of noodles and sauce.

The sauce mix of savoury braising stock, chili, lard, a tinge of vinegar was different from the BCM genre that Tai Hwa made popular. It is not as vinegary as the Tai Hwa version, so if you like a tangy dry version, you can add more yourself. The chilli is also different, closer to the fish ball noodle version and than the BCM one.

The bean sprouts, which you would not find in other BCM versions, were a nice touch, giving the noodles a different texture.

Besides noodles, they also sell sides like braised pig trotters, pig intestines and pig skin. And if you like garlic, they would give you some of the braised garlic cloves, which are soft and flavourful. If you don’t, please do not waste these tasty treats.

It’s definitely not your usual BCM but I like it, and so do their daily line of fans. Sometimes the line may look short but just be aware that many in the queue have multiple bowls order.
