Teatime in Seoul

Many tourists come to Seoul to enjoy the cafe culture. Besides the smaller shops, the market is dominated by the brandnames. Nothing wrong with those, some of them were quite good.

O’Sulloc 오설록

The O’Sulloc Bukchon Tea House was opened in Seoul in Nov 2021. It is located right at the entrance to the Bukchon Hanok Village in a rebuilt Hanok (Korean traditional house) with a high-end beauty salon on the ground floor.

O’Sulloc is a famous Jeju green tea planter and company. Take the lift to the second floor to place the order, and you can proceed to take a seat indoor (with really powerful air-conditioning) or the outdoor balcony for the beautiful view.

The three-story building recreates the ambience of a 1970s domestic house, with a view of Hanok Village. It provides facilitated tea tasting and tea blending classes with various herbs, as well as wonderful tea and desserts to rest the weary feet.

Whether you’re a tea enthusiast or just looking for a cozy spot to relax, this tea house offers an unforgettable experience that blends tradition with modern comfort.

JM Coffee Sinsa

JM Coffee Sinsa is a newly opened trendy cafe, established by the company that created Compose Coffee to provide high-quality coffee. It is becoming a new landmark in Sinsa-dong.

A spacious and stylish interior stands out in this space, with various seating options available from the first to the fourth floor, allowing for a comfortable time. There is also an outdoor terrace and rooftop, where you can enjoy a variety of atmospheres.

They offer a variety of coffees and desserts, with the Basque cheesecake and Mont Blanc cake being popular menu items.

And occasionally they will offer seasonal flavours like this fresh figs shortcake.

The coffee extracted from rich beans boasts a deep flavour. But it was not the coffee that wowed me. The cake was really delicious.

Cafe Artisée

There are many cafes around the bustling Sejeong Daero but most are filled with tourists. There’s one quiet hideaway in the basement of Sejong Art Centre that I often go to have that coffee after work.

Cafe Artisée is a cafe chain in Seoul. It’s french inspired and has a variety of breads, baked goods, sandwiches, salads and other foods. I first saw it in Vietnam, and now I am back at the source.

The cafe is decorated with illustrator Kyung Yunmee‘s artworks. Winner of the Ezra Jack Keats New Illustrator Award, Kyung’s illustrations contain emotional stories that resonate with the cafe customers.

The cakes were quite simple by Seoul standards, but the breads were quite delish, especially the savoury ones.

I ordered a salt bread and a slice of chocolate cake, and couple of cold coffee to rest in the aircon comfort of the theatre basement.

Salt bread has become a viral sensation in Seoul with many Korean bakery cafes offering this buttery bread with a delicate sprinkling of quality salt. Not the best example but still quite good.
