After an enjoyable visit to the legendary Yellow Crane Tower, Princess and I were famished from all the climbing and walking. We followed the GPS and walked to a nearby restored Qing monument for dinner.
Songjian Hot Pot, which opened recently in Feb 2026, is a scenic restaurant that has become very popular in Wuhan. It is located on the sloping roof of the ancient city of Doujiying in Wuchang, where diners can enjoy a panoramic view of the Yellow Crane Tower, the Yangtze River Bridge and the train passing through the city.
Doujiying 斗级营 was once the military camp of the Wuchang Prefecture in the late Qing Dynasty, where money and grains were managed. This shop seamlessly blends a poetic natural environment with urban landmarks, making it perfect for taking photos and enjoying the view. It’s recommended to visit during the “blue hour” (after sunset) for an even better experience. As night falls, the pine forest lights illuminate the landscape, creating a dazzling spectacle. In the distance, the upturned eaves of the Yellow Crane Tower are outlined in the night, and with the evening breeze, visitors feel as if they are in a painting.
We got a table very quickly despite it being a crowded evening. When we entered the dining hall, the air was filled with the rich, sweet smell of the tomato soup base. We did not even hesitate to order that as the soup base for our hotpot.
And like all popular hotpot restaurants in China, there’s a help-yourself condiment bar that you can mix your own dips.
The meat choices were limited, and the Australian Angus beef and Inner Mongolian lamb looked interesting enough. The portions were quite small for that price.
I was really impressed how they have sliced the pork kidney sideways to such large pieces. While the knife work was impressive, the taste wasn’t – there’s still a bit of funkiness to the urinary organ.
Princess and I love blood pudding, but when this was served, we couldn’t help but wonder why was it so neon red. But once we chopped it up like soft beancurd and boiled them in the hotpot, they returned to the usual colours that we were familiar with.
The offals were cleaned thoroughly and the duck intestines were so crispy that we ordered another full serving since we don’t get this in Singapore anymore. Princess wasn’t so keen of the beef aorta and tripe, so we did not go for more; I quite like those as well because they sliced them really well.
For our mains, we ordered a special pork wonton wrapped using skins made from fish meat. These wontons were little parcels of umami and very suitable for hotpot as they do not burst when boiled in the hotpot.
Caidian district in Wuhan produces a lot of lotus roots and is known for the quality of its produce. The lotus roots are delicate, white, sweet, crisp, and with long, soft lotus root fibres, which make them really good eats with the hotpot.
And to round up our food pyramid with more fibres, we ordered some of our favourite – daisy crowns and boletus mushrooms.
Simmering slowly, the various flavours gradually blend and permeate each other, creating a mellow and unique fragrance. The rich aroma of beef and mutton, the smoothness of mushrooms, and the refreshing sweetness of vegetables are layered together in a sip of broth.
After dinner, you can walk to the riverbank and admire the light show along the banks with the Yangtze Bridge in the background. Overall an enjoyable dinner with an outstanding environment.
