Tak Hingloong 德興隆 @ North Point

Staying in North Point allows you to explore the neighbourhood for some really good eats that have survived so many crisis the city has to endure over the years.

Tak Hing Loong has been selling tofu since 1960. And this shop is opened in 2018 when they moved from a larger shop on the same street when that shop had to be enbloc.

The popularity of these products among locals is undoubtedly due in large part to their soy product offerings, including tofu pudding, soy milk, pan-fried stuffed tofu, raw tofu, tofu puffs, and fried tofu.

This morning, Princess and I walked from our hotel to come to try their fresh soy milk 豆漿 and soy pudding 豆腐花. Absolutely delicious.

We also tried their pan-fried Yong Taufoo, which featured some minced pork stuffed on a cavity formed on their bean curd. The tofu was absolutely delicious, and with their chilli bean paste, they were great eats at HKD 9 for two pieces.

Unfortunately we had breakfast already, if not we would try their other items like pan-fried dumplings, pork buns, and beef buns on offer. If you like, there’s the ginger-flavoured syrup version of the soy milk and soy pudding.

Tak Hing Loong is currently run by the third-generation owner, Liew Linhing 廖連慶, affectional known to the neighbours as Brother Hing. Sixty years ago, Brother Hing’s grandfather started as a street vendor selling fermented bean curd in Kwai Chung before eventually moving to North Point to open a bean product shop.

Tak Hing Loong originally occupied a ground-floor shop in a tenement building. In 2014, the tenement building was acquired and demolished, forcing them to relocate. The tofu shop, which had quietly supported three generations and its long-time employees on Marble Road, was acquired and redeveloped by the developer. Local residents expressed their regret at the demolition, recognising the shop’s significant place in their lives. Brother Hing decided to preserve the old brand on the same street!

To this day, Tak Hing Loong still uses stone mills to grind soybeans, a complex and skilful technique required to create tofu and soy milk with a smooth texture and rich soy flavour. All of these soy products are made using non-GMO Canadian soybeans, ensuring locals can eat with peace of mind without any hormone contamination.

This is one of only two tofu shops in Hong Kong that still makes them the traditional way. Must visit if you are in town.
