National Treasure – Yangshao Boat-shaped Painted Pottery Jar (Neolithic)

Egyptian painted boats on pottery jar during Predynastic period (~3500BC), the Chinese made boat-shaped pottery jar.

The painted ceramics of the Yangshao and Majiayao cultures in Neolithic China and those of Predynastic Egypt reflect distinct artistic traditions shaped by their own environments and beliefs. While created independently, these works show notable parallels in how early civilisations approached form and decoration.

Pottery | Yangshao Culture (c.5000-3000 BC) | H: 16.5cm, D: 38.5cm | Unearthed at Beishouling, Baoji, Shaanxi Province, 1958 | National Museum of China Collection. 陶器|仰韶文化(约公元前5000年一前3000年)|高16.5厘米,直径38.5厘米|1958年陕西宝鸡北首岭出土|中国国家博物馆藏

The boat-shaped painted pottery jar is a water container, which evolved from the small-mouthed pointed-bottomed bottle of Yangshao culture. The two ends of the pottery pot are raised in the shape of a boat, and the body of the pot is decorated with net patterns, which is very similar to the scene of collecting nets from the river to fish or drying fishing nets. These scenes of life by the water are true portrayals of ancient people making boats, nets and fishing.1

Well-modelled in red clay, painted in black on both sides a panel of cross-hatch ‘fishnet’ pattern framed by two rows of outstretching triangles, the concentric neck supporting a bulb mouth and rolled rim, a pair of lug handles on top of the shoulder, the flattened plump vessel with small flat base tapered up to pointed ends.

Pottery | Neolithic – Banpo Phase of Yangshao Culture (5000-3000 BC) | 12 3/4in (32.5cm) width; 8in (20.5cm) high | Private Collection.

This similar piece of pottery from a private collection was placed on auction by Bonhams New York, on 21 March 2022. This was excavated from a different site and attributed to Banpo Phase of the Yangshao Culture. The Yangshao Culture, which can be traced back to 4,900BC to 2,900BC, is a Neolithic culture that existed extensively along the Yellow River in China. The culture flourished mainly in what is today Northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, North China’s Shanxi Province and Central China’s Henan Province.

The Banpo phase of Yangshao Culture represents the early phase (around 4800-3600 BC) of this Neolithic culture, characterised by large, organised villages with distinct residential, pottery-making, and burial areas, exemplified by the famous Banpo site near Xi’an, known for its unique pottery featuring fish and human-mask designs, evidence of matriarchal society, and early agricultural practices with domesticated pigs and dogs.

Neolithic artists put their daily lives onto the pieces they create. While the original use of these pieces are up to interpretation, they give us a glimpse into the daily routines of these prehistoric cultures. And when you pull the lens further, you will see parallels across the world, where different cultures develop in similar fashion.
