Visited Big Boss Chef, opened by local celebrity/comedian Alamak Hui (辉哥) and his cousin, after recent visit to SUTD. Located at Punggol Marina, the restaurant offers a nice yacht view with a calm, chill environment.

The food here is very value-for-money. We ordered the Curry Fish Head Set Meal at $49.90 that included a portion of curry fish head, 1 meat dish and 1 vegetable dish from a set menu, and daily house dessert — generous and satisfying. We added an a la carte item, and still paid less than $80 for 5 persons for lunch.

The vegetable course, we picked the sautéed spicy potato leaves (番薯叶) with belacan chilli. The chilli was delicious with a generous amount of fried shrimp for that savoury satisfaction.

Next, the tzechar classic, sweet and sour pork (咕咾肉). While the pork was covered with a crispy crust, we find the sauce too sour for our liking. And it was very dry, too little sauce.

Next, we added an a la carte dish, Taiwanese-style sautéed “three-cup” chicken (三杯鸡). “Three cup” refer to equal measure of soy sauce, vinegar and rice wine that are used as condiments to this dish, and it can be traced to Filipino adobo. The claypot gave it a lot of bonus points.

The curry fish head (咖喱鱼头) is made with Chinese-style curry with a mild blend of curry that borders between Peranakan and Indian. The gravy is thicker than the Indian version, but less lemak (coconut milk cream) than the Peranakan one.

The serving was only half a head of fish, and fish used was a red snapper, quite fresh but not very big. I wished there were more vegetables. But the gravy was enough for all of us to drown our rice in the curry.

The dessert was cold green bean soup (绿豆汤), nice for a hot day like this.

The service was friendly and sincere, and the food quality is around the neighbourhood tzechar store standard. I wouldn’t drive here specially for this restaurant, but this is the only choice around the area during the weekday lunchtime. And if you are in the area for the sun and sea, the air-conditioning in the restaurant will be a nice reprieve.
