Simple Fare

Hup Seng Porridge 協成粥品 @ North Point

Breakfast wasn’t included in our hotel stay (yet to attain the status with the Hyatt group), so Princess and I walked across to Java Road Market to get some local breakfast on the Cooked Food Centre on the third floor.

Hip Shing Porridge 協成粥品 is run by three sisters (~~fair is foul, and foul is fair~~~), and just like in Macbeth, things are not what they seem. Good can look like bad, and bad can look like good.

First of all, the market looked empty on a normal Hong Kong morning. Only three tables were occupied by old folks having some steamed rice rolls, porridge and/or sautéed noodles in soy sauce. And an old man (which I later found out is the sisters’ father) was peeling garlic forlornly at one corner. Princess and I weren’t sure what we were getting, but we decided to stick to our choice.

We ordered a bowl of 豬粉腸豬紅粥 pig small intestines and blood curd porridge to share. I have been eating pig blood curd, aka 豬紅 “Chu Hung” (lit. “Pig Red” in Cantonese) since I was a kid, and then they stopped selling it in Singapore due to Nipah virus outbreak back in 1999. The 27-year ban was lifted on April 1, 2026 but I did not know how Princess got a liking for it. We were so surprised by how big the portion was for HKD 31. It was not stingy on the amount of pig blood curd and pig intestines. Everything was on point, but I would prefer a thicker porridge.

We ordered two types of steamed rice rolls – 豬潤腸粉 steamed rice rolls with pork liver and 牛肉腸粉 steamed rice rolls with beef – which took some time to arrive as they were made from scratch upon ordering. They tasted so much better than they looked. At first impression, they looked the ones we had when we went to Chaozhou. But under the skin was a Hong Kong-style steamed rice roll extraordinaire. The rice rolls were of the right thickness and still had a bit of chewiness despite the mushy look. The special sauce had the right amount of savoury and sweetness that wasn’t too overpowering.

But the real test was the pork liver version, where the timing had to be just right or you would end up with a piece of rubber. They nailed it perfectly in terms of doneness, any second less you get bloody liver. Like what I mentioned earlier, the shop was so different from what it looks like at first. We now think about the rice rolls and the wonderful sauce even back in Singapore. Will definitely come back to have more.
