A birthday celebration for my eonni 언니, she got to pick the dinner that evening. She is not a big fan of beef, and brought me and the rest of the company to this pork specialist restaurant.

Tteuleseo Hwarogui is a barbecue restaurant located in Gwanyang-dong, Anyang-si, Gyeonggi-do. True to its name (which translates to “Charcoal Grill in the Garden”), it features a large garden-like terrace area filled with trees. It provides a relaxing, suburban resort feel despite being located right by a major city intersection.

The restaurant maintains its own small vegetable patch on-site, serving freshly harvested local greens as part of their diverse side dishes (banchan). Besides the vegetable patch, there’s the assortment of fermenting pots (jangdok) for making all the different kimchis and condiments.

Seating options include the main dining hall, private rooms, and outdoor tables. A variety of side dishes (banchan) are served; however, diners sitting outdoors must help themselves to the side dishes at the self-service station.

My favourite banchan – yangnyeom gejang (Spicy Raw Crab) – was included in the medley. The flower crabs used were pretty small, but the flavour was not small. It was absolutely delicious and you can easily suck out all the flesh from the crab.

We also ordered a plate of yukhoe (육회), a traditional Korean dish of raw beef tartare garnished with fresh greens and sliced pear, that came with a gochujang based dressing. The marbling of the Hanwoo (Korean beef) was excellent, making it a very tender dan flavourful yukhoe.

It serves high-quality Hanwoo (premium Korean beef) and female domestic pork (amtoeji). Female pork has finer muscle fibres and a cleaner taste profile, making it a preferred choice for premium Korean BBQ spots specialising in cuts like samgyeopsal (pork belly). Popular cuts include pork belly (samgyeopsal), five-layer pork belly (ogyeopsal), and marinated pork galbi.

High-quality Hanwoo beef and pork are grilled over real charcoal braziers. The pork belly (samgyeopsal) and five-layer pork belly (ogyeopsal) are fresh, glossy, juicy, and savory. The cuts are thick, and the five-layer pork belly, in particular, includes the skin, adding a pleasantly chewy texture. The marinated sow ribs (am-dwaeji yangnyeom galbi) are tender and sweet; the marinade is well-absorbed thanks to even scoring, and the sweetness is not overpowering.

The cold noodles (naengmyeon) are refreshing with a pleasantly chewy texture, making them an excellent choice to finish the meal. I chose the spicy version with added gochujang (red pepper paste) which had added kick to it.

I always enjoy these gathering whenever I am in Seoul and surrounded by my Korean friends. Korean BBQ is a group activity, with lots of beer and shochu, as well as great banter and sometimes spontaneous singing and dancing. This is just one of the many great places to have a value-for-money KBBQ.
