Amongst other cultural foods in Jakarta, Padang restaurants are some of the easiest to find. There will always be a Padang restaurant right around the corner. However the quality might not be as satisfactory nor fulfil the requirements that you wish a Padang restaurant to have. Fortunately, Sari Ratu has continued to fly the flag for Padang.
Padang food or Minang food is the cuisine of the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra, Indonesia. It is known across Indonesia as Masakan Padang or simply Padang food, after the city of Padang the capital city of West Sumatra province.
Padang food is famous for its rich taste of succulent coconut milk and spicy chili. The main emphasis is on three elements; gulai (curry), lado (chili pepper) and bareh (rice). No traditional Padang meal is complete without the three — spicy chili sauce; thick curry and perfect steamed rice.
Sari Ratu
This restaurant is housed in Plaza Indonesia, an upmarket shopping mall in the most expensive district. But because it is there, you can be assured of a hygienic Padang.
Most Padang restaurants will parade their dishes and then returned those that are not consumed, only to be sent to the next table. Sari Ratu does it too, but the clientele is a bit more sophiscated, so they would not be messing with those dishes that they do not want to eat. Also, Sari Ratu will charge the plate as long as they can see that it has been touched.
I would not go into details of the dishes in Sari Ratu, all their gulai-based dishes are fantastic. I am no fan of the chicken in Indonesia – they are usually quite tough and malnourished, but do try their ayam gulai. I would skip the ayam pop though.
And remember to wash everything down with a Tehbotol.
