Hidden inside a golf club at the Southern end of the island is a piece of hidden jade that served delicious Cantonese food and dimsum. But do not deceived by the exclusivity, they served a dimsum a la carte buffet that’s less than $30 per person, and a Michelin Plates mention.
When Peony Jade opened its first outlet in Clarke Quay back in 2004, it quickly gained a loyal following for serving up the rambunctious notes of Sichuan food alongside the delicate flavours of Cantonese dishes. The restaurant proved to be so successful that it opened a second outlet at Keppel Club, which received a Bib Gourmand award in the debut of Singapore’s Michelin Guide in 2016.
The interior decor is as cheesy as it gets – reminded me of the Chinese restaurants of the 70s with its big red lanterns and a stage on one end for those memorable Chinese wedding banquets. My nephew nearly held his wedding here.
Its success today can be attributed largely to the relatively young Executive Chef Ricky Liew who assumed his current role in 2011. Of Cantonese descent, Liew has always remained true to his roots spending years honing the art of Cantonese cooking. He has trained in the kitchens of three-Michelin-starred restaurant The Eight in Macau as well as some of Singapore’s top-notch Cantonese institutions like Lei Garden and Crystal Jade.
There were some items that would only be served one time, like this Western-style salad with shrimps, shark fin and fish maw soup and shrimp filled lotus roots with salted egg yolk.
The roast pork belly was soggy and was pretty bad, but the rest of the Sichuan appetisers like sautéed string bean with spicy minced pork and “saliva” chicken were not too bad.
The crazy thing about this buffet was the number of choices! You would not finish everything in the menu, and all of them were decent good. And with OCBC Visa, you get 4-free-1 promotion. I didn’t know this until the waitress reminded me of it. If not for the awkward location, this would have been a favourite restaurant of mine.
